//// First edition. An off-print from the *Mémoires* of the Toulouse Academy of Sciences. A modern adaptation of Fermats writings. Brassine demonstrates that Fermat was the inventor of infinitesimal calculus long before Newton and Leibniz. "The only appropriate format for reproducing Fermats works was that of the French Précis, which we have endeavored to compile, taking care not to alter or omit any of the inventors ideas or proofs, and taking advantage of the benefits of modern algebraic notation in our presentation. In this way, we hope to have made easily understandable propositions whose elegance and subtlety are obscured by notations that lack simplicity. The first part presents a complete summary of the treatises contained in the *Opera varia*; the second part reproduces Diophantuss *Arithmetica* and Fermats notes; the remainder is an extensive excerpt from Fermats letters, which follow the *Opera varia*. The first issue was printed and published by Douladoure in Toulouse; the subsequent issue was published in Paris by Mallet-Bachelier. Provenance: Toulouse Artillery School (name gilt on the lower spine). It is worth noting that Émile Brassine (18051877), a mathematician and artillery officer, was a professor of applied sciences and mathematics at this same Toulouse Artillery School. /// PLUS DE PHOTOS SUR WWW.LATUDE.NET‎
