(BNF). Dimension du cadre gravé : 31 x 22,5 cm. /// Petit in-folio de //// The only known copy of this edition printed in Tours. It is a copy of the Paris edition of which the BNF and the Mazarine are the only libraries to keep a copy. Text reads : "In Maximi's palace, a hen laid an egg, on which the image of the comet was seen. ... We leave it to the curious of Paris to make their profit & to investigate the cause. Printed in Tours by P. Gripon, on the original engraved in Paris by Hainzelman." The great comet of 1680 is the "Kirch comet", also known as "Newton's comet", for Isaac Newton used it to test and verify Kepler's laws. Visible even in daylight, it was one of the brightest comets of the 17th century. "It was observed for more than four months, the last time on March 19, 1681. The comet was credited with some prodigious feats: in Rome, a hen was said to have laid an egg bearing the comet's image... Sparking philosophical and metaphysical reflection, it was the source of two important texts of the late 17th century that heralded Enlightenment thought: Bayle's Pensées sur la comète (1682) and Fontenelle's Entretiens sur la pluralité des mondes (1686)." (BNF). Size of engraved frame : 31 x 22.5 cm. /// PLUS DE PHOTOS SUR WWW.LATUDE.NET‎
