‎Lyon, Jean-Baptiste Devenet, 1655.‎

Reference : 17723

Bel exemplaire. /// In-12 de 95, (1) pp. Vélin. (Reliure de l'époque.) //// First edition. An apology of Van Helmont "against those who attack the novelty of a doctrine". Its author is Honoré-Marie Lauthier (or Lautier), who was dean of the faculty of medicine at the University of Aix. The famous iatrochemist Jan Baptist Van Helmont, (Brussels, 1577-1644) used Paracelsus' theory of the "archaea" to put an end to Aristotle's teaching. He created the word "gas", demonstrated the mechanism of combustion and discovered carbon dioxide. In physiology, he discovered the importance of gastric juice in digestion and was the precursor of neuro-endocrinology. The same publisher from Lyon, Devenet, published a new edition of Van Helmont's Ortus medicinae the same year. Lauthier's dedicatory epistle is addressed to Jean Baptiste Forbin, marquis de La Roque and baron de Gontard, president of the Parliament of Aix-en-Provence. Manuscript ex libris dated 1658 of Claude Grasset, doctor of Tarascon. A lack on one white end paper. A fine copy. Apparently, no copy in America in Worldcat. /// PLUS DE PHOTOS SUR WWW.LATUDE.NET‎
