‎ Second ouvrage de Pierre Franco, très rare. S'il y reprend une partie des matériaux de son premier ouvrage, le "Petit traité" de 1556, il ne s'agit en rien d'une seconde édition de celui-ci comme l'affirme Garrison-Morton. Malgré son titre, Franco ne traite pas que des hernies mais offre un traité complet de chirurgie. Illustré par 25 bois gravés, tous sauf trois à pleine page, montrant des instruments de chirurgie et deux squelettes. Pauvre, et largement autodidacte, il a grandement amélioré la technique de l'herniotomie. "La gloire qui s'est attaché au nom d'Ambroise Paré ne doit pas nous faire oublier celui qui fut au moins son égal, Pierre Franco, et qui ne laissa pourtant que deux ouvrages. (...) La très grande rareté de ces volumes fait aujourd'hui tout leur prix." Hahn, Dumaitre, Histoire de la médecine et du livre médical 172. Petit manque à la coiffe. Papier bruni ici ou là, plus marqué en haut des pages sur la seconde moitié du volume. If he takes up some of the material of his first book, the "Petit traité" of 1556, it is not the second edition of this one as Garrison-Morton states. Despite its title, Franco does not only deal with hernias but offers a complete treatise of surgery. Illustrated with 25 full-page woodcuts, all but 3 full page, showing surgical instruments and two skeletons. Norman 828 : "Franco was influencial in bringing operative surgery back into the realm of regular surgical practice, recapturing it from the ignorant hands of charlatans and itinerant "cutters". His major interest was in hernial surgery, to which he introduced several important innovations including an operation preserving the testicle (which was usually removed), a less risky incision at the base of the scrotum and methods for the surgical release of stangulated hernia. Franco was also the first surgeon to address himself seriously to the removal of the bladder stones; he gave an account of perineal lithotomy and was the earliest to describe and perform the suprapubic incision". Poor, and largely self-taught, he greatly improved the technique of herniotomy. The book includes also Franco's operations for cataract. "The glory, attached to the name of Ambroise Paré should not make us forget Pierre Franco who was at least his equal, and who nevertheless left only two books. (...) The very great rarity of these volumes makes their price today." ( Hahn, Dumaitre). Garrison-Morton 3574. Small loss at the head of spine. Paper browned here and there, more marked at the top of the pages on the second half of the volume.
