‎Paris, Jean Dupuis,1663, Vve Langlois, 1651 .‎

Reference : 15379

//// The most complete edition of Father Niceron's work and the first edition of Father Mersenne's treatise on optics. This beautiful work is illustrated with a stunning frontispiece engraved by Daret in the Baroque style, a portrait, and 50 out-of-text plates, including one double-page, featuring perspective views, trompe-l'oeil, anamorphoses, and more. "Niceron's (1613-1646) major work, however, dealt with perspective and geometrical optics. His Perspective curieuse (1638) defines the range and nature of the problems he addressed... Although aware of the latest theoretical developements, Niceron concentrated primarily on the practical applications of perspective, catoptrics, and dioptics, and on the illusory effects of optics then traditionally associated with natural magic...contains perhaps the first published reference to Descartes's derivation of the law of refraction (1638) and thus gains some historical significance... Sympathetic to the natural magic still current in his time, he tended to view optics as the art of illusion rather than the science of light." DSB "The classic phase of anamorphosis, during which it came to relate vitally to a series of scientific and theological concerns, occurred in France and Rome in the 1630s and 1640s. The theorist at the centre of the Paris-Rome developments was Jean-François Niceron, whom we have already characterised as a geometrical theorist of some note in the Mersenne circle." Kemp, The science of art p. 210. Hinge split, leather missing on the spine, water stains. /// PLUS DE PHOTOS SUR WWW.LATUDE.NET‎
