Paris Armand le Chevalier 1873 Première édition. Deux volumes. Une merveilleuse collection de fac-similés d'affiches politiques du début de la guerre franco-prussienne et de la commune de Paris jusqu'à la fin du mois de mai 1871. Il s'agit de reproductions complètes des affiches originales, avec coloriage à la main le cas échéant. Le dos est en cuir avec des étiquettes en cuir vert et des titres dorés. Le dos est un peu frotté, mais reste attrayant. Les planches marbrées sont légèrement frottées. A l'intérieur, les pages sont propres et bien rangées. Les pages arrière (index), imprimées sur du papier moins cher, sont un peu plus sombres. Le premier volume traite de la guerre et du siège. (Paris a été assiégé et encerclé par les Allemands de septembre 1870 au 28 janvier 1871, date à laquelle les Français se sont rendus). Les dures conditions de l'armistice et l'humiliation de la défaite ont contribué à la radicalisation de la population parisienne. Le deuxième volume contient des fac-similés des affiches politiques de la Commune, qui s'est achevée le 28 mai 1871. La page de titre originale du premier volume est en quatre couleurs (drapeau français et fond jaune). S'y ajoute une seconde page de titre, datée de l'année suivante, qui a été insérée lors de l'édition du second volume, les deux étant vendus comme un ensemble. [vi], 1022, 676 pages. Chaque volume comporte des index. 28cm x 23cm. *La Commune est un gouvernement radical et révolutionnaire qui a dirigé Paris du 18 mars au 28 mai 1871. Le gouvernement français, basé à Versailles et dirigé par Adolphe Thiers, considérait la Commune comme une menace existentielle. À partir d'avril 1871, les forces gouvernementales lancent une offensive militaire pour reprendre Paris. L'assaut final, connu sous le nom de "Semaine sanglante", débute le 21 mai. De violents combats de rue s'ensuivent et des barricades sont érigées dans toute la ville. La victoire du gouvernement est marquée par des exécutions massives et des représailles : les estimations du nombre de morts parmi les communards varient entre 20 000 et 30 000, ce qui en fait l'un des événements les plus sanglants de l'histoire de Paris. cxv cxv
First edition. Two volumes. A marvellous collection of facsimiles of political posters from the start of the Franco-Prussian war and the commune of Paris, through to the end of May 1871. These are complete reproductions of the original posters, complete with hand colouring where appropriate. Leather spine with green leather labels and gilt titles. There is some rubbing to the spine, but still attractive. Marbled boards with a little rubbing. Internally the pages are clean and tidy throughout. A little darkening to the rear pages (of index) which are printed on cheaper paper. The first volume deals with the war and the siege. (Paris was besieged and surrounded by the Germans from September 1870 to january 28th 1871 when the French surrendered). The harsh terms of the armistice and the humiliation of defeat contributed to the radicalization of Paris's population. Just weeks after the siege, the revolutionary Paris Commune was declared.* Volume two contains facsimiles of the political posters during the commune, which ended on May 28th 1871. The original title page from volume one is in four colours (the French flag and a yellow background). In addition to this, there is a second title page, dated the following year, which was inserted when the second volume was produced, and the two sold as a set. [vi], 1022., 676. pages. Each volume has indexes. 28cm x 23cm. *The commune was a radical and revolutionary government that ruled Paris from March 18 to May 28, 1871. The French government, now based in Versailles and led by Adolphe Thiers, viewed the Commune as an existential threat. Beginning in April 1871, government forces launched a military offensive to retake Paris. The final assault, known as "Bloody Week" (La Semaine sanglante), began on May 21. Fierce street fighting ensued, with barricades erected throughout the city. The government's victory was marked by mass executions and reprisals: estimates of Communard deaths range from 20,000 to 30,000, making it one of the bloodiest events in Parisian history. .

Paris Regue d'Art ancien et modern des deux mondes 1919 Première édition. Bel exemplaire de ce numéro spécial, consacré aux représentations de la guerre par Steinlen. Couverture en papier beige avec titres noirs et illustration collée sur le plat avant. Dans l'ensemble, l'ouvrage est propre et en bon état, mais les bords sont légèrement abîmés. La colle à l'intérieur de la couverture avant a séché, ce qui fait que celle-ci risque de se détacher du bloc de texte, mais elle tient encore. Elle a été solidement fixée à l'aide de ruban adhésif d'archivage. Une planche détachée est jointe au livre. Elle semble avoir été conçue comme une planche d'art, car elle est découpée à une taille différente du reste du livre et ne semble jamais avoir été reliée. 52 pages. Les planches sont propres et soignées, sur papier glacé. Les pages de texte présentent des rousseurs modérées. 30,5 cm x 21,5 cm.
First edition. A nice copy of this special number, dedicated to the representations of the war by Steinlen. Tan paper covers with black titles and tipped on illustration to the front board. Overall clean and in good condition, but with a touch of nicking to the yapped edges. The glue to the inside front cover has dried up, so the front cover is in danger of separating from the text block, but still holding. It has now been held securely with archival tape. Some of the illustrations are a bit loose. There is a loose plate (detached) enclosed with the book. This seems to have been intended as an art plate, as it is trimmed to a different size to the rest of the book, and shows no sign of ever having been bound in. 52 pages. The plates are clean and tidy on glossy art paper. The text pages have moderate foxing to them. 30.5cm x 21.5cm. .

A nice copy of this two volume work, unfortunately lacking the title page to Volume I. The volume starts on gather A. Original full leather boards, with a touch of bumping / edgewear to the boards. Recent spine with titles and date to the spine. There is a little water staining to the work, particularly to the edges, and a slight nicking to the edges of the blank front end paper. Some darkening / foxing, again particularly to the edges. Owner's inscriptions to the inside front board and to the 2nd end paper. (IWe think what is laid in as the first end paper is a later addition, when the spine was replaced - the second end paper appears from condition and inscriptions to be the original one). Also lacking is leaf 3I2 (page 99/100) with the text here also lacking. Bizarrely, a full page plate, dating from 1814 has been laid in to face page 275. This is an engraving by Wm Craig and L. Brown, showing national liberty crushing the nations of Europe. This is perhaps laid in here as it is opposite an homily against Disobedience and Wilfull rebellion. This long homily, published in various forms, is important, as it was part of the celebrations following the failure of the rebellions against Queen Elizabeth I. To the end of the work is "A thankesgiving for the suppression of the last rebellion." 1-98, [vi], 1-98 101-320 [iv]. 290 x 210 mm (11œ x 8Œ inches).

Reliure probablement du milieu du XXe siècle. Bien complet des 12 planches gravées d'après Moreau etc. Les planches sont un peu frottées. Aucun titre au dos ou à la couverture. Intérieur propre dans l'ensemble mais avec un peu de noircissement et une tache étrange. Toujours un volume attractif. Dommages aux poissons d'argent sur les deux premières pages. [LXXV], 320. pp. Longue vie de Fontaine au début de l'ouvrage. 200 x1 20 mm
Volume two only of this edition (comprising six volumes in total). First Thus. Marbled card boards with brown cloth spine. Probably mid 20th Century binding. Complete with 12 engraved plates after Moreau etc. Boards are a little rubbed. No titles to spine or cover. Inside clean overall but with a little darkening and the odd stain. Still an attractive volume. Silverfish damage to the first couple of pages. [LXXV], 320. pp. Lengthy life of Fontaine to the front of the work. 200 x 120 mm (7Ÿ x 4Ÿ inches). .
