Édition originale. Fournier sur le premier admettre l'origine syphilitique du tabès et à établir le rapport entre la syphilis et la paralysie générale. Il exposa sa théorie pour la première fois en 1822 (De l'ataxie locomotrice d'origine syphilitique. Paris, Masson). Alfred Fournier (1832-1914) fut, à l'hôpital du Midi, l'élève du grand spécialiste des affections vénériennes, le Dr Ricord, dont il suivit l'enseignement non officiel. Il fut l'un des plus grands syphilologues; il développa considérablement les connaissances sur la syphilis congénitale. Il eut en charge les cours sur les maladies vénériennes à Lourcine, puis à Saint-Louis. Cachet de l'Institut catholique de Paris et étiquette en pied du dos. Dos passé, bon état intérieur. He also made noteworthy advances in dermatology and in the study of gonorrhea and chancroid... He had an enormous clinical practice... He described the symptoms of secondary syphilis, outlined the role of syphilis in producing aneurysms, and provides descriptions of nasocranial osteitis, recurrent roseola, syphilitic sarcocele, tertiary glossitis, gumma of the pharynx and soft palate, and syphilitic phthisis. He was very interested in syphilitic infections of the nervous system and wrote several books on this subjects as well as two landmark papers on the syphilitic origin of general paresis... During Fournier's day it was believed that locomotor ataxia had a special predeliction for persons already predisposed to hereditary syphilis but he pointed out that it was also found in patients who had no family history of the disease...".
