His researches are in analysis function theory, infinitesimal geometry and rational mechanics. He was awarded half the Bordin Prize for solving the problem of cutting and filling (déblais et remblais) originally posed by Monge. In 1889 he won second place (after Poincaré) in a competition sponsored by King Oscar II of Sweden...". (Cajori p. 390 - DSB I p. 194) ---- "E. GOURSAT's activities, professor of mathematical analysis in the University of Paris, have been in the theory of functions, pseudo and hyper-elliptic integrals, differential equations, invariants and surfaces. He was a leading analyst of his day. At the University of Paris the Goursat course and Goursat certificate became synonyms for his course in analysis and its successful completion. He received numerous honors including the Grand Prix des Sciences Mathématiques.
