Alfred Fournier (1832-1914) fut, à l'hôpital du Midi, l'élève du grand spécialiste des affections vénériennes, le Dr Ricord, dont il suivit l'enseignement non officiel. Agréé médecin des hôpitaux, il fut chargé d'un cours sur les maladies vénériennes, à Lourcine, puis à Saint-Louis. He also made noteworthy advances in dermatology and in the study of gonorrhea and chancroid... He had an enormous clinical practice... He described the symptoms of secondary syphilis, outlined the role of syphilis in producing aneurysms, and provides descriptions of nasocranial osteitis, recurrent roseola, syphilitic sarcocele, tertiary glossitis, gumma of the pharynx and soft palate, and syphilitic phthisis. He was very interested in syphilitic infections of the nervous system and wrote several books on this subjects as well as two landmark papers on the syphilitic origin of general paresis...". (cf.
