La marine française n'est pas réputée pour s'être illustrée durant les guerres de l'Empire. Et pourtant, à y regarder de plus près, le comportement de nos marins fut souvent héroïque. Un premier document anonyme évoque la vie de la flottille des Sables d'Olonne durant l'année 1803. Les trois textes suivants portent essentiellement sur la bataille de Trafalgar. Le rapport du commandant Lucas, capitaine du vaisseau Le Redoutable d'où partit le coup mortel porté à Nelson, décrit le comportement exemplaire des marins français qui, cernés par les vaisseaux anglais, résistèrent jusqu'à la dernière limite. Le Journal du commissaire de la marine à bord du Bucentaure, quant à lui, met en avant les différences d'engagement dans la bataille entre les navires français. Enfin, le carnet de route de Jacques-Louis Chieux nous emmène de la campagne d'Allemagne de 1800 à Trafalgar.
