Although the birth of the modern study of runic inscriptions can be dated as far back as the 17th century, it was not until the end of 1800 that runic studies were given methodologically sound, philologically rigorous basis. Ludwig Wimmer's Danmarks runenindskrifter - the first most comprehensive survey of Danish runestones - laid the firm foundations upon which all subsequent generations of scholars have investigated, interpreted and reclassified the vast material. Julius Magnus Petersen (1827-1917) was a Danish copper engraver and artist-archeologist. His family was of Scottish origin. He engraved plates on numismatic and natural history subjects, and collaborated with the Society of Antiquaries periodical Archaeologia. He was closely associated with the Museum of Nordic Antiquities and Runic Works. His knowledge of the memorial runestone benefitted from the numerous journeys he took at home and abroad, especially in the SkÃ¥ne provinces and in Schleswig and Holstein, from which he returned carrying large cycles of drawings. ‎"Cette étude sur Six-Fours permet d’aborder sur le fond l’histoire de cette partie de l’Ouest varois dont la suite d’événements forme une trame serrée et complexe. C’est pourquoi les pages de ce livre sont ponctuées de dates et de faits dont quelques-uns sont choisis pour marquer les charnières entre les périodes retenues. Nous avons porté notre attention sur les structures politiques, sociales, économiques et démographiques, en faisant précéder nos observations par des études géologiques, botaniques et zoologiques. L’existence quotidienne, passée ou actuelle, n’est pas oubliée, non plus que les croyances, les pratiques religieuses, les opinions, et la création artistique. Ce livre ne prétend pas à l’exhaustivité, mais tel qu’il est, il offre à ses lecteurs, une approche raisonnée de l’Histoire de Six-Fours, et, au-delà, de celle de l’Ouest varois dont elle ne peut être séparée. Cette histoire rejoint l’actualité par des souvenirs de personnalités, de familles six-fournaises, de récits, quelquefois écrits, d’événements qui se situent entre le Second Empire – le témoignage de George Sand, par exemple - et aujourd’hui. Chaque partie de l’ouvrage a été confiée à un spécialiste, parfois même à plusieurs, qui ont conjugué leurs travaux pour nous en livrer la synthèse assortie des références bibliographiques les plus récentes, sans omettre les travaux des historiens qui, depuis des décennies, ont apporté leur pierre à l’édifice. Au travers des études portant sur la géographie humaine, la géologie, la flore, la faune, la préhistoire, l’Antiquité, le Moyen Âge et l’époque moderne, le lecteur se familiarise avec l’émergence du territoire six-fournais et son évolution jusqu’à la Révolution ; nous pensons, entre autres, à l’existence de la ville grecque de Taurœïs, puis de Taurœntum, dont le nom et les traces sont restés inscrits dans le paysage, mais aussi à la séparation avec Toulon (1156) puis avec La Seyne (1657). Grâce aux documents contemporains collationnés par nos soins, il est loisible de mieux connaître les changements fondamentaux traversés par Six-Fours au cours de la période contemporaine. Deux temps forts sont ainsi mis en évidence : la construction des défenses militaires (le fort de Six-Fours), et la Seconde Guerre mondiale, auxquelles nous avons donné une place conséquente.
