London: Rivington 1889
Second (revised edition). Although substantially the same work, Gore addresses the issues raised in two Catholic rebuttals of his original work. Blue cloth boards with gilt titles. 32 page catalogue for Rivington publications to the rear. This book is a defence, in popular form, of Anglicanism, and Anglican Ordinations and Sacraments, against the criticisms of Roman Catholic authorities. The blue boards are mainly clean, with a little fading and rubbing to the spine. A touch of bumping to the head and tail, with very slight fading. The half title has significant foxing to it. There are two pencil inscriptions showing that the book belonged to a convent library. Owner's name to the head of the title page. xviii, [2], 176, 32. pp Gore (1853-1932) was an influential Oxford theologian. He was ordained a priest in 1878, and was the principal of Pusey House from its foundation until 1893. Under his influence, the Oxford Movement moved towards Modernist lines (a break with the Tractarians). He was also very concerned with social action, and he helped to found the Christian Social Union. In 1901 he became the Bishop of Worcester, in 1911 he succeeded Francis Paget as Bishop of Oxford.
London J.G. & F. Rivington, and J. Booker 1836
First edition. Hardback. Contemporary half calf rebacked, book-plate of the Tottenham Collection, Bath Guildhall Library. Signature of Ed Tottenham at the head of the title, "sold" stamp of Bath Municipal Libraries on the title. Lithographic frontispiece with the facsimile signatures of the two short-hand writers, T.J. Brown and Ed, Tottenham. The marbled boards are somewhat rubbed, but clean and tidy. There is chipping to the spine, and the top panel (1 inch) is detached (inside book awaiting repair). The title label to the spine has gone. Internally clean, but with some foxing spots. (ii) 484 pp.
London: J.J. Stockdale, 1813
An Anti-Catholic pamphlet, printed by J.J. Stockdale. An examination of the Claims of Roman Catholics, particularly those in Ireland, and concluding that "Too much is already conceded to the Papists." The initials W.L.J. appear in ink to the top of the title page. There are some annotations in ink throughout the text. These are in a contemporary hand, and appear to be proofing corrections - changing the grammar, correcting errors, and altering some footnotes. Perhaps this copy was being prepared for a second publication? If so, it came to nothing, as Copac cites only two holdings of this issue, with no others cited.Good clean, but with no wrappers (if any). This was once part of a larger work, and has been removed from this - but was published alone (with price, printers details and colophon here). There is a touch of darkening to the outside pages. Internally clean, with the annotations as described above. This work was published anonymously, and there is no reference on Copac or in bibliographies of anonymous literature to any author. However, the name Richard Mence Esq. is written in a contemporary hand alongside the stated "Country Gentleman" This would certainly fit well. Richard Mence was a Barrister, at Middle Temple, who went on to write about the Law of Libel. He was active in writing at this time, and his dedication in the Law of Libel, was to those who oppose "Disloyal and Seditious Principles" These almost certainly included Catholic Emancipation. With his awareness of Libel laws, he was perhaps wise to remain anonymous! 49 [i]. pp
