Dernière édition, revue et augmentée d’une préface de Georg Ernst Stahl et surtout, par le même, de toute la seconde partie “Specimen Beccherianum Fondamentorum Documentorum Experimentorum”. Pour Lenglet Du Fresnoy, “cet auteur est un des plus véridiques et des plus habiles, qui ait travaillé la chimie. Il y a plusieurs éditions de ce livre, mais moins bonnes que celle de Stahl. Cependant ce dernier éditeur a omis dans son édition, le Traité “De Mercurificatione de Becher”” (III-116). “C’est dans cet ouvrage, un des meilleurs de Becher, qu’il est question du Principe universel qui se trouve dans les eaux et dans les sels, possède un grand nombre de propriétés et que presque tous les Philosophes ont nommé “acidum universale, spiritum esurinum, acetum naturae et solvens catholicum”” (Dorbon-257) “This is the last edition of Becher’s most famous work. It is the only one published in-4° [...] The tract called “Specimen Beccherianum” (by Stahl) has a separate pagination” (Duveen 59 ; Ferguson I-88-89). Disciple de Becher, Georg Ernst Stahl (1659-1734), chimiste et médecin, développa la théorie du phlogistique dont les bases étaient posées par Becher ; elle consiste à expliquer la nature d’un agent que nous appelons calorique et celle des phénomènes auxquels il donne lieu. Summary Alan Stahl's distinguished career in numismatics has ranged over numerous topics in the study of coins, monetary history, and medallic art, from antiquity through the Middle Ages and into the modern era. This volume brings together cutting-edge scholarship from three overlapping groups of scholars to honor him: former students from the American Numismatic Society Graduate Summer Seminar whom Stahl taught during the 1980s and 1990s, colleagues and former students at Princeton University where he has taught since 2005, and collaborators in the Framing the Late Antique and Early Medieval Economy research project he has directed since 2014. The broad scope of the articles reveals how widely Stahl has influenced numismatics and numismatists over the last five decades, through his research, teaching, and training of generations of students.
