‎Germany Johann Christian Dieterich 1777 Une très belle collection de planches gravées miniatures de Chodowiecki, toutes consacrées à l'apparence et à la mode. L'uvre se compose de deux parties (bien que les planches soient mélangées). Dix d'entre elles sont des illustrations tirées du *Göttinger Taschenkalender* de Lichtenberg. Ce style s'apparente à l'imagerie utilisée dans *Le Progrès du libertin* de Hogarth et s'est apparemment inspiré de cette série. La série « illustre le « Progrès de la vertu et du vice » ; la série est divisée en deux parties, l'une illustrant la vie « vertueuse » juxtaposée à celle, moralement condamnable, d'un homme et d'une femme respectivement ; chacune est illustrée par une série de portraits en médaillons qui semblent refléter les effets de la moralité (ou de l'absence de celle-ci) sur la physionomie des modèles, soulignant ainsi la théorie de Lichtenberg selon laquelle l'expression est le miroir de l'âme. » (British Museum). La série complète comprend douze planches gravées. Toutes sont présentes ici. Entre ces planches s'intercalent dix-sept planches gravées par les mêmes artistes représentant des coiffures à la mode. Provenant pour la plupart de la série « Coiffures Angloises », certaines sont issues de « Coiffures de Berlin » et quelques-unes semblent représenter des coiffures françaises complexes de l'époque. La reliure est une simple carte recouverte de papier rigide, présentant des frottements et des fentes au niveau du dos. À l'intérieur, les gravures sont collées sur du papier rigide. Bien que la plupart des images soient en assez bon état, l'une d'entre elles a été déchirée en deux et recollée en deux parties, et une autre présente un coin arraché. Toutes présentent de légères usures sur les bords. Il s'agit néanmoins d'une collection attrayante. 27 feuillets. Collées d'un seul côté. 9,5 cm x 6 cm. Les gravures du « Göttinger Taschenkalender » correspondent aux numéros BM 1863,0613.380-391, pour lesquels il existe une notice détaillée. Daniel Nikolaus Chodowiecki (1726-1801) fut un graveur et illustrateur allemand majeur du XVIIIe siècle, particulièrement actif dans le domaine de l'illustration de livres et de calendriers.‎

‎A very nice collection of miniature engraved plates by Chodowiecki, all focussed on appearance and fashion. The work is in two parts (although the plates are mixed). Ten of them are illustrations from Lichtenberg's Göttinger Taschenkalender. This is similar to the imagery used in "Rake's progress" by Hogarth and was apparently inspired by this series. The series is" illustrating the 'Progress of Virtue and Vice'; the series is split into two parts, one illustrating the 'virtuous' life juxtaposed to the morally condemnable of a man and of a woman respectively; each is illustrated by a series of portraits in roundels which seem to reflect upon the effects of morality (or lack of the latter) on the physiognomy of the sitters, hence underlining Lichtenberg's theory of expression being the mirror of the soul." (British Museum). The full series is twelve engraved plates. All are present here. Interspersed with these plates, are seventeen engraved plates by the same artists showing hair fashions. Mostly from the series "Coiffures Angloises" there are also a number from "Coiffures de Berlin" and a couple which appear to be intricate French hair styles of the time. The binding is a simple stiff paper covered card, with rubbing and splitting to the spine. Inside, the prints are pasted onto stiff paper. Although most of the images are in fairly good condition, one has been torn in half and pasted down in two parts, and another has a corner torn off. All have a little edgewear. Nevertheless, and attractive collection. 27 leaves. Pasted to one side only. 9.5cm x 6cm. The Göttinger Taschenkalender prints conform to BM 1863,0613.380-391 who have a lengthy entry on this work. Daniel Nikolaus Chodowiecki (1726-1801) was a major 18th-century German engraver and illustrator, especially active in book and calendar imagery. .‎
