Correspondance sur trois générations et vie quotidienne d'une famille anglaise sous les règnes tumultueux d'Henri VI, d'Edouard IV et de Richard III. Ces lettres nous renseignent sur la vie au XVe siècle, et plus particulièrement sur la vie de la petite noblesse anglaise, la « gentry » pendant la guerre des Deux-Roses. Par exemple les lettres envoyées par Margaret Paston à son époux. Margaret Paston née en 1423 est la fille d’un riche fermier anglais. À la mort de ce dernier, elle hérite des terres et se marie en 1440 à John Paston, un grand propriétaire terrien de la région avec qui elle a sept enfants. Ce dernier, aussi avocat, passe beaucoup de temps à travailler loin de sa famille, c’est donc à elle qui revient la responsabilité de veiller sur les enfants et les propriétés terriennes. Ils communiquent dans ces moments d’éloignement par lettres, encore aujourd’hui pour la plupart conservées. Margaret Paston meurt en 1484 après avoir laissé une partie de sa fortune à l’église. — "This collection of letters covers three generations of an important Norfolk family during the 15th century. It brings to life a period poised between medieaval and modern history, as fuedalism collapsed and England was divided by the Wars of the Roses. The Paston family during this period were soldiers and students, lawyers and landowners, courtiers and members of Parliament. Their correspondence gives the reader an intimate picture of everyday life on one hand; on the other it portrays a family on the fringes of great events. First hand accounts range from battles in the Wars of the Roses, to preparation of the defences against French invasion. Contemporary illustrations and current photographs relate the people to the places where they lived. Special features expand issues raised in the letters to give concerns of rural life, or by commenting on 15th century attitudes to love, sex, learning and the law."
