Le texte lui-même a été composé par Th. Woolnoth, et était paru d'abord en 1816, mais il est d'usage de placer ce beau recueil sous le nom de l'artiste. Thomas Hastings (1778-1854) est un personnage étonnant aux multiples facettes : né Thomas Barnett, il changea son nom en celui d'Hastings en 1812, et c'est le même homme qui fit une brillante carrière militaire dans l'armée anglaise, de 1795 à 1811, puis dans les douanes (1819), et qui s'attira ensuite la renommée comme graveur et peintre amateur, spécialisé en paysages, marines, vues topographiques, etc.Un seul exemplaire au CCF (INHA). - - VENTE PAR CORRESPONDANCE UNIQUEMENT

Summary The 'Leiden Glossary' provides a record of the understanding and interpretation of the patristic and grammatical texts studied at the Canterbury School of Theodore and Hadrian, regarded by Bede as the high point of Christian culture in early medieval England. Each entry in the 'Leiden Glossary' is provided with detailed commentary on the sources consulted by the two Canterbury masters (earlier glossaries; Isidore; Eucherius) and the later uses of the glossary by compilers of the Epinal-Erfurt and Corpus glossaries. The 'Leiden Glossary' is thus a key witness to one of the greatest schools of learning in the early Middle Ages. Recueil original d'articles (souvent en tirés-à-part originaux) du Comte Adolphe de Circourt. Le salon d'Anastasie de Circourt et de son mari le Comte Adolphe de Circourt fut l'un des plus célèbres du XIXe siècle. Comme l'écrit Sainte-Beuve, "aucune prévention, aucun préjugé n’arrêtait cette personne, si pieuse d’ailleurs et si ferme dans ses croyances, dès qu’elle sentait qu’elle avait affaire à un esprit de valeur et à un homme de talent". Correspondant de Tocqueville, le Comte collabora à de nombreuses revues (Revue Britannique, Revue Contemporaine, Revue Britannique, etc...). Etat très satisfaisant (mq. de papier au second plat, ex-libris Bibliothèque des Bruyères, très bon état par ailleurs) pour cet recueil établi par l'auteur, le Comte de Circourt et provenant de sa bibliothèque des Bruyères, à La Celle-Saint-Cloud.

The Life of Henry Chichele, Archbishop of Canterbury, Who lived in the times of Henry the V. and VI. Kings of England. Written in Latin. Now made English. And a Table of Contents Annexed

First edition. Old, but not contemporary full leather binding. 6 raised panels to the spine, with gilt panels and label. Bookplate to the inside board. Frontis illustration of Chichele (by M Burghers). A small ink annotation to the ffep shows that the book was purchased for 2 S. 6 d. in 1699 (12.5 pence). 8vo. First edition. Although shown by Duck as almost a Saint, and presented as a Protestant before the Reformation, for his arguments with Pope Martin, a modern view would look at Chichele as a lawyer and diplomat who protected his various prebends and livings at every chance, and who, whilst working to prevent schizm in the Church and Papacy, was nonetheless prone to personal arguments with the popes. The work is dedicated to Archbishop Thomas - this was Thomas Tenison, Archbishop of Canterbury at the time of writing. The binding is in a good clean condition. A little rubbing to the binding edges. still holding well. Internally, generally clean and tidy, with a touch of darkening to the end papers. slight water damage to the edge of the last two leaves (not affecting text). Henry Chichele (1364-1443) from Northamptonshire became Archbishop of Canterbury and founded All Souls College, Oxford.
