Rare tirage offert par Winston Churchill à son secrétaire personnel au 10, Downing Street, Peter Geoffrey Oates, avec ex-dono signé et daté. Homme de confiance du Premier Ministre Clement Attlee au début de l’année 1951, il le reste de Winston Churchill après sa victoire aux élections d’octobre, qui le gardera à son service jusqu’à devenir un proche du couple Churchill, ainsi que de nombreuses lettres l’attestent. Churchill, qui travaillait au lit le matin, dormait l’après-midi et travaillait après le dîner jusqu’à 3 heures du matin et plus tard, demanda beaucoup à son secrétaire privé, lequel supportait avec flegme ses fréquents accès de colère. L’envoi est daté de 1954, un avant qu’il ne cède sa place de Premier ministre à Anthony Eden. Florence Vivienne Entwistle débuta dans la photographie en aidant en 1934 son mari, Ernest Entwistle et son fils, Antony. Elle créa son propre studio à la fin des années 1930 et se spécialisa dans les portraits de personnalités. Les relations avec les Churchill dépassèrent le strict cadre professionnel puisque, en octobre 1949, la fille des Churchill, Sarah, épouse le fils de Vivienne, Antony. Les Churchill « apprendra le mariage… par les journaux et en furent très contrariés… surtout Clémentine, qui le prend très mal ». Néanmoins, le 19 décembre 1949, le couple Churchill rencontre le couple Vivienne et, « après un agréable déjeuner ensemble, Florence Vivienne réalise le portraits de Winston Churchill, dans son studio de Piccadilly » (Gilbert, Vol. VIII, p. 496). Le portrait plut tant à Churchill qu’il l’utilisera dès l’année suivante, pour la campagne des élections générales de février 1950 et qu’il deviendra l’un des plus célèbres du Prime Minister. Florence Vivienne était connue pour exiger de ses sujets qu’ils viennent dans son studio et la jaquette qui orne son autobiographie (They Came to My Studio, publiée en 1956) est illustrée par cette photographie. Vivienne rappelle (p. 16) combien cette image est devenue iconique, et qu’elle était alors la seule qu’elle ait prise de Churchill. La relation avec les Churchill devenant familiale, Vivienne « est peut-être la seule photographe à avoir eu le privilège de photographier toute la famille » dans le cadre privé, réalisant celui de Clémentine quelques semaines plus tard. La National Portrait Gallery conserve 214 portraits de Vivienne, dont celui-ci, faussement daté de 1951, dont 14 pour la famille Churchill, la plupart pris dans leur maison de campagne, Chartwell.

The photographs and cartoon portraits in this volume, selected from a total of more than five thousand collected by Martin Gilbert over several years, vividly portray the variety and span of Churchill's life. More than a third of the photographs and most of the cartoons came from Sir Winston's own albums. Many of these photographs have appeared nowhere else. Many were rescued from fading originals, or from glass-plate negatives on the verge of destruction. As here displayed, they are supported by a rich historical commentary, often in Churchill's own words or those of his contemporaries. Martin Gilbert has been able to date many of the photographs precisely, and then to find in the archives what Churchill was writing or saying at that time. — "Churchill's official biographer, Martin Gilbert, has brought together over 360 photographs and cartoons in a volume that bears witness to the length of his public life and gives tantalising glimpses of the private man. Taken from a host of archives and from Churchill's own albums, many of the photographs reflect the figure so well known to the British public. But the man with the trademark pout and fat cigar is also a young Sandhurst cadet in fancy dress, a mounted war correspondent during the Boer War, a writer and painter and an elderly man overcome with emotion at the reaction to one of his speeches. Although the images may be browsed selectively, a cover-to-cover perusal reveals their full impact, showing how Churchill's rise to greatness is reflected in his face. As a child, he already seems poised and mildly imperious. A Member of Parliament at 25, by the time he reaches his 30s, his expression seems heavy with the weight of public duty. Captions accompanying each image place them in context and many include quotations from Churchill's own writings and speeches. Gilbert's photographic portrait will appeal to a wide audience. It should make a valuable addition to existing collections of Churchill literature and will prove an impelling appetiser for further reading." (Karen Tiley)
