As a descendant of Africans, Guillen created his work within the framework of negrismo and processes of race mixing and transculturation, which he called ""Cuban color"". He was a laureate of the National Literature Prize of Cuba and is considered Cuba's national poet. In 1961, the Congress in Havana established the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba , with Guillen as its president. Guillen received various literary awards, including the Lenin Peace Prize for the peoples' peace, the Viareggio Prize, the National Literature Prize of Cuba etc. In 1972, Chilean singer Marta Contreras and the Cuban Grupo Manguare released an album titled ""Musica para Guillen,"" based on Guillen's poems.
