The Duchess of Devonchire, one of the first lady travellers on here own through Switzerland. She published a ‘Sketch of a descriptive journey...’ in London, 1796, a poem written for her children, in memory of her roundtrip in 1793 through Switzerland (cf. de Beer, Travellers in Switzerland). The mezzotinto is a very special technique, costly and with beautiful results, invented in 1642 in Holland by the German artist L. v. Siegen, it became very popular in the 17th and 18th c. in the English portrait-painting.Although a very important list of works of Ang. Kauffmann (Ec. Suisse) and Dickinson are mentionned in ‘Le Blanc’s’ bibliography, this particular beautiful work is not mentionned. This plate is offered in a fine, handmade, gilt frame.‘Die Schabtechnik, auch Mezzotinto oder Schwarzkunst genannt, ist ein Tiefdruckverfahren, das 1642 in Holland von dem Deutschen Ludwig von Siegen entwickelt wurde. Sie erlebte im 17. und 18. Jahrhundert in der englischen Porträtmalerei ihren Höhepunkt.Aufgrund des hohen Arbeitsaufwands, der mit dieser Technik verbunden ist, gibt es wenig moderne Arbeiten in Mezzotinto. Dies gilt umso mehr, als sich mit der geschabten Aquatinta ein zumindest ähnlicher Effekt erzielen lässt. ‘wp.radiertechniken.de’. (Sehe auch S. Reprint from the first illustrated edition (1816 ) with the 20 lithographic plates, done by Count Charles-Philibert de Lasterie in Paris, who founded that same year the first French lithographic printing-office. The original edition was first printed in the Morning Chronicle in 1799, the Duchess of Devonshire's poem ‘The passage of the mountain of St. Gothard’ appears not to have been published in book form until 1802, at which time three editions appeared (in quarto, octavo and duodecimo), each of them printing Delille's translation alongside the English text. The earliest of these is generally considered to be the quarto edition, all editions are unknown to Perret's, ‘Guide des livres sur la montagne’ and are very rare indeed. Perret -; cf. Charles Warren's article "An Alpine bibliographical curiosity" in the Alpine Journal of 1984.
