"De septembre 1906 à mai 1918, le Suisse Pierre Gilliard (1879-1962) a côtoyé toujours plus intimement le tsar Nicolas II, son épouse Alexandra, leurs quatre filles et leur fils Alexis. Devenu en 1909 le précepteur officiel du tsarévitch, il a développé une pédagogie originale avec ce garçon hémophile et trop gâté. Mais surtout, c’est en démocrate qu’il a observé les erreurs politiques d’un couple d’autocrates manipulé par Raspoutine, alors même que la tourmente de l’histoire renforçait davantage l’affection du Suisse pour les parents aimants qu’ils étaient et leurs cinq enfants. Cette dualité est l’un des pivots de son livre, qui a aussi l’immense avantage de raconter de l’intérieur les années d’avant le massacre plutôt que le massacre lui-même, sur lequel on a déjà tellement écrit. Séparé des Romanov quelques semaines seulement avant leur exécution à Ekaterinbourg, Pierre Gilliard eut bien du mal à regagner la Suisse avec la gouvernante des filles du tsar, Alexandra Tegleva, qu’il épousa peu après. Il fut ensuite très impliqué, comme accusateur, dans l’affaire de la fausse Anastasia sur laquelle il publia un autre livre chez Payot."
