De moderne en vernieuwende Europese kunst van rond 1900 stimuleerde Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) om zich los te maken van de Weense schildertraditie en zijn eigen koers te volgen. Kunstenaarsvereniging Wiener Secession, waarvan Klimt medeoprichter was, toonde in 1898 voor het eerst een overzicht van de Europese avant-gardekunstenaars.
