‎Dukes of Arenberg and Music in the Eighteenth Century : The Story of a Music Collection‎

‎, Brepols 2015, 2015 Hardcover, iv + 267 pages, ., 184 col. ills, 220 x 280 mm, English, ISBN 9782503555577.‎

‎This publication is the revised, expanded, and updated version of the book in French that appeared in 2010 from the same publisher: Les ducs d?Arenberg et la musique au XVIIIe siècle. Histoire d?une collection musicale. The study explores in depth the development of a music collection created by one of the most influential noble European families under the Ancien Régime ? a family resident in the Spanish and then the Austrian Netherlands, the territory of the future state of Belgium. Today forming an integral part of the private family archives kept at Enghien (in the Hainaut region of Belgium), this exceptional collection of manuscripts and prints from all over Europe began to expand in the last years of the seventeenth century, and grew gradually and continually throughout the eighteenth century. Analysing this collection has afforded a rare opportunity to discover and identify musical sources entirely unknown to us until now; these include works by the Italians Alessandro Scarlatti, Pietro Torri, and Antonio Vivaldi. With the aid of unpublished archival material, it has proved possible also to relate and explain how this important music collection was amassed, and, through the prism of the musical affinities of an aristocratic family, to illustrate the evolution of taste in eighteenth-century Europe. The introduction to the book sets out key milestones in the history of the Arenbergs and their music library. The three chapters that follow trace the development of this collection under Dukes Léopold-Philippe (1690-1754), Charles-Marie-Raymond (1721-1778), and Louis-Engelbert (1750-1820) d?Arenberg, while an Epilogue sheds light on the era of the Prince and composer Paul d?Arenberg (1788-1844). Via music lessons, private and public concerts, operatic performances (not only in Brussels but also in Paris, London, Vienna, and Rome), and contacts with such musicians as Mozart, Paisiello, and Haydn, the Dukes acquired in the region of 1500 music manuscripts and prints, where the above names, as well as those of Lully, Handel, Pergolesi, Grétry, and Salieri, appear alongside those of musical personalities long since fallen into obscurity. Finally, the book tells a hitherto largely untold story of musical life in the former Southern Netherlands and Europe under the Ancien Régime, the family archives shedding particular light on the role played in this by the Dukes of Arenberg as patrons of the Arts. Towards this end, the book makes detailed reference to and reproduces the most significant sources and documents. Review ?The book is beautifully produced and consists of everything a critical reader wishes to find: a fine structure, excellent prose, many full colour reproductions of highest quality, and, above all, a lot of information (?) All in all, this is a lovely book which will easily serve as an adornment on the bookshelves of readers with an interest in western music of the eighteenth century.? ‎CRAZY ABOUT DYMPHNA, The Story of a Girl who Drove a Medieval City Mad‎

‎, Hannibal Publishing, 2020 HB++, 290 x 250 mm, 384 pages, ENG edition. ISBN 9789463887427.‎

‎In the early sixteenth century, the popularity of Saint Dimpna made the abbot of the abbey of Tongerlo decide to have a huge altarpiece that would depict the life story of this special saint. The assignment came into the hands of the Antwerp painter Goossen Van der Weyden, grandson of Flemish Primitive Rogier, who took over many elements from his grandfather in his eclectic style. The result of this assignment, the monumental Dimpna altarpiece, was recently acquired by The Phoebus Foundation. The panels were treated in the Foundation's restoration studio for three years. The astonishing result led to new insights into the history of the altarpiece, its maker and commissioner, and about the cult of Saint Dimpna. Leading specialists shed their light on the altarpiece and their years of research are now bundled in this luxurious, richly illustrated publication.‎

‎AT HOME IN A MUSEUM The story of Henriëtte and Fritz Mayer van den Bergh‎

‎, Hannibal Publishing, 2021 HARDCOVER , 240 x 170 mm, 240 pages. fine. ISBN 9789463887717.‎

‎The Museum Mayer van den Bergh in Antwerp is a house full of art. Art which surprises, intrigues, moves. The museum today is internationally renowned as the home of the famous Dulle Griet ('Mad Meg') by Pieter Bruegel the Elder. For the locals living in Antwerp, the museum is above all a well-kept secret. At the same time, there is always amazement that so much beauty could be brought together in one place. Who built this collection? The museum is housed in a historic building which recalls two individuals, Henriëtte van den Bergh (1838-1920) and Fritz Mayer van den Bergh (1858-1901). The entire collection was assembled by Fritz, a man with a keen interest in the Medieval Renaissance periods. Following Fritz's early and unexpected death on 4 May 1901, it was his mother, Henriëtte van den Bergh, who had the museum built to house his art collection. By doing so, she preserved this exceptional collection and at the same time succeeded in keeping alive a memorial to her son. The museum opened its doors in 1904. This book offers an insight into the history of the museum and its founders. It is based on in-depth research carried out in the archive of Museum Mayer van den Bergh, which among other things contains the rich correspondence between Fritz and Henriëtte as well as an extensive photo collection. Over four chapters, the book explores the personalities behind the collection, their social background and networks, their interests and their modus operandi. More than anything else, this is the story of Henriëtte van den Bergh, the founder of the museum, who died one hundred years ago. With her visionary projects, she proved herself not only to be a forceful personality, but also someone with a forward-looking organisational talent and an entrepreneur with an exceptional mission - and all in a period when the involvement of women in public life was anything but the norm.‎

‎Beautiful work written by Yamada Isai with illustrations by Katsushika Hokusai consisting 55 episodes in the life of Shaka (Buddah). Hokusai has made 35 illustrations for 27 episodes, and 23 of those are new iconographies in Shaka’s biography, inspired by various pictorial resources, while other 12 scenes originate in the former or traditional ones of these subjects. With thirty-two monochrome illustrations and covers various events, starting from the court of King Suddhodana, the Buddha's father, before his birth in the Indian kingdom of Kapilavastu, and ending with the distribution of the Buddha's relics after his death. Throughout Asia, depictions of the Buddha's life have followed common narrative structures and artistic conventions for centuries. There is no single authoritative textual source for the Buddha's life story, so visual narratives have relied on well-known episodes, such as his birth as Prince Siddhartha, his renunciation of worldly life, his ascetic practice, attainment of enlightenment, and eventual death. These narratives have been adapted creatively to specific contexts, sometimes incorporating new episodes or extending the story beyond the Buddha's death. The Illustrated Record of the Life of Sukyamuni by Yamada Isai and Katsushika Hokusai can be compared to historical fiction rather than a strict historical account. Hokusai's illustrations, in particular, prioritize creative additions to the story over adhering strictly to canonical episodes. For example, the book does not depict the Buddha's death but focuses on other aspects such as familial conflicts, supernatural encounters, and scenes of hell. The included double-page illustration portrays a dramatic episode that concludes volume 1. The right-hand illustration shows the canonical episode of the Buddha's conception, where his mother, lady Maya, receives a dream indicating her pregnancy. However, the left-hand illustration deviates from the conventional depiction of Maya's sister, Gotami, as a benevolent aunt to the Buddha. Instead, she is portrayed as a jealous character transformed into a giant snake due to her envy. This aspect of the narrative draws inspiration not from the Buddha's life stories but from the tale of Lady Xi (468-499), a would-be empress during the Chinese Liang dynasty.
