Early editions of Motley's important histories, in handsome uniform bindings. First set : 4 portrait -frontispieces and a folding map. Second set: Portrait frontispiece of William of Orange. Third set : 4 steel engraved plates. Nine volumes by the American historian John Lothrop Motley (1814-1877), describing the Dutch struggle for independence down the years. He tells of a stirring period in history with a wealth of detail on the characters involved, devoting two volumes to the life of the Dutch statesman John of Barneveld who played an important part in the conflict with Spain.
