‎"LOCKE, JOHN.‎

Reference : 51322

(1706)

‎Posthumous Works. Viz. I. Of the Conduct of Understanding. II. An Examination of P. Malebranche's Opinion of ""Seeing all things in Gord"". III. A Discourse of Miracles. IV. Part of a Fourth Letter for Toleration. V. Memoires Relating to the Life of Ant... - [THE UNCOMPLETED FINAL CHAPTER OF LOCKE'S ""ESSAY""]‎

‎London, Printed for W.B. and J. Churchill, 1706. 8vo. Nice contemporary brown full calf, very neatly rebacked. Title-page and second leaf strengthened at fore-margin. A bit of brownspotting to last quire, otherwise very nice. (4), 336 pp.‎

‎First edition of this influential collection of Locke's posthumous works, in which we find the first printing of his highly important ""On the Conduct of Understanding"" (takes up the larger part of the volume, namely pp. (1) - 137), which he himself considered of the utmost importance. He had actually intended it to be the final and largest chapter of his ""Essay"", his seminal magnum opus which constitutes ""the first modern attempt to analyze [human knowledge]"" (PMM 164), but he did not completely finish it before his death (1704) and it thus didn't make it into the fourth edition of the ""Essay"", where Locke had planned to make it the greatest part and the concluding chapter. ""In 1697, Locke had written to Molyneux: ""I have lately got a little leisure to think of some additions to my book [the Essay], against the next edition, and within these few days have fallen upon a subject that I know not how far it will lead me. I have written several pages on it, but the matter, the farther I go, opens the more upon me, and I cannot yet get sight of any end of it. The title of the chapter will be Of the Conduct of the Understanding, which, if I shall pursue, as far as I imagine it will reach, and as it deserves, will, I conclude, make the largest chapter of my Essay."" [Locke #847, vol. 6:87] The new chapter was intended as a new final chapter to be added to the 4th edition (1700) [Locke #231], but Locke did not complete it. It was published in 1706 by King and Collins and has often been reprinted, independently, with other works by Locke or with Bacon's Essays."" (Attig, Locke Bibliography, Pennsylvania State University). Before his death, Locke had left instructions for his literary executors, Anthony Collins and Peter King. These instructions mentioned four works which did not see publication in his life-time, but which he felt deserved publication, among these were ""On the Conduct of the understanding,"" ""Seeing all things in God,"" and ""A Discourse on Miracles"", which were all published for the first time in the present collection of ""Posthumous Works"". As will be seen from the title-page, the collection also contained the unfinished ""Fourth letter for toleration"", some notes for a biography of the first Earl of Shaftesbury, and an English translation of ""Méthode nouvelle de dresser un recueil"". All these posthumous works were included in the collected edition of Locke's ""Works"" from 1714 as well as in all subsequent editions. The work of the greatest consequence included in this collection is no doubt ""Of the Conduct of Understanding"" which takes up more than a third of the volume. It became one of Locke's most read and popular works" during the 18th century alone, it was printed no less than 8 times and is now, as it were, considered a most important part of Locke's writings and an essential part of all collections of Locke's works. It was first published separately in 1754.‎

‎Scarce complete run of all 9 volumes of the first edition of the fist Danish edition of Shakespeare's Tragic Works, containing the first editions of the first translations into Danish of several of Shakespeare's tragic works: Romeo and Juliet" Julius Caesar Richard II Henry IV Henry V Henry VI Richard III Coriolanus King John Henry VIII Cymbeline" As You Like It. The first volume is in the very rare first printing (usually it is found in the second, revised edition from 1811). These nine volumes constitute the entire ""Tragic Works"", begun by the renowned Danish translator Peter Foersom, who finished the first four volumes and left part of the fifth in manuscript, when he died in 1817. After his death, P.F. Wulf continued the great task of translating Shakespeare's Tragic works into Danish, finishing the fifth volume and doing the last four on his own (1818-1825).The first four volumes contain:Julius Caesar" Hamlet King Lear Romeo and Juliet Richard II Henry IV Henry V. Of these, the following have been translated and printed before: Hamlet (1777), King Lear (1790-92), but the rest of them are in the first Danish translations, first printings.Volume five consists in Henry VI, and volumes six to nine: Henry VI (continued) Richard III Othello Coriolanus King John Henry VIII Cymbeline As You Like It. Of these, the following have been translated and printed before: Othello (1792), Cymbeline (1792), but the rest of them are in the first Danish translations, first printings. The present translations of Shakespeare's works are considered the most important in Danish literature and became the standard version of the works. The first edition of these translations are quite scarce, especially all nine volumes together, and with the first volume in the first issue.(PMM 122 - first edition). ‎

‎"BOHR, NIELS. [translator:] PROFESSOR GE GE.‎

Reference : 57925

(1986)

‎Ni’ersi Bo’er ji [Chinese, i.e. ""Niels Bohr Collected Works""]. Vols. 1-10 [out of 12]. - [WITH DEDICATION FROM THE TRANSLATOR]‎

‎Shanghai, Huadong shifan daxue chubanshe, 1986 - 2001. 8vo. 10 volumes, all in publisher's uniform full cloth bindings with gilt lettering to spines and front boards. All volumes with presentation inscription from the translator to Niels Bohr's son, Ernest Bohr: ""To Mr. Ernest Bohr with / highest respect from / GeGe"". A fine and clean set of the first 10 volumes of Niels Bohr Collected Works.‎

‎First Chinese, and overall, translation of 'Niels Bohr Collected Works' with dedication inscription from the translator ot Bohr's son Ernest Bohr. Translator Prof. Ge Ge found Bohr’s personality and mode of thinking in harmony with traditional Chinese culture, which may be part of the explanation for his lifelong dedication to Niels Bohr and his work, and his great effort to translate and publish the only non-English edition of the Niels Bohr Collected Works in existence today. The first volume in English had appeared in 1972, and Ge Ge was able to publish a Chinese translation in 1986, fourteen years later.Ge Ge’s enthusiasm not only led to the Collected Works being published with impressive promptness in China, but no doubt provided additional motivation for the Director of the Niels Bohr Archive to prepare the volumes faster. In this way, Ge Ge had an influence even on the publication of the original edition. In 2001 Ge Ge received the prestigeousDanish Order of the Dannebrog “for hiscontribution to increasing the Chinese understanding of Danish science and promoting the Denmark-China scientific cooperation. He was in fact able to translate all the volumes of the Collected Works, the last volume of which was published in English in 2006. It testifies to Ge Ge’s dedication that he enthusiastically went on with the work in spite of having lost his eyesight" he died the following year. The volumes contain the following: Vol. 1: Early Work (1905-1911) Vol. 2: Work on Atomic Physics (1912-1917)Vol. 3: The Correspondence Principle (1918-1923) Vol. 4: The Periodic System (1920-1923)Vol. 5: The Emergence of Quantum Mechanics (mainly 1924-1926) Vol. 6: Foundations of Quantum Physics I (1926-1932) Vol. 7: Foundations of Quantum Physics II (1933-1958) Vol. 8: The Penetration of Charged Particles through Matter (1912-1954)Vol. 9: Nuclear Physics (1929-1952) Vol. 10: Complementarity beyond Physics (1928-1962) ‎

Beautiful large woodcut initial at beginning of each new work. (8), 194, (2)" 310, (2) pp.[Radulphus:] Woodcut device to title-page. Numerous beautiful woodcut, allegorical initials, both large and smaller, throughout. (4 - title, dedications), (14 - index), (6), 314 pp.‎

‎First editions of both works, being the first edition of the works [""Several Studies""] of St. Eucharius, most of them printed for the first time here, as well as the first edition of Rodulfus Tortarius' (or Radulphus Flaviacensis) commentaries of Leviticus (the third of the Books of Moses), written in Latin, in 20 books. Saint Eucherius, bishop of Lyon, (ca. 380 - ca. 449) was a high-born and high-ranking ecclesiastic in the Christian Church of Gaul. He is remembered for his letters advocating extreme self-abnegation. Henry Wace ranked him ""except perhaps St. Irenaeus the most distinguished occupant of that see"".""St. Eucherius Bishop of Lyons, theologian, born in the latter half of the fourth century"" died about 449. On the death of his wife he withdrew to the monastery of Lérins, where his sons, Veranius and Salonius, lived, and soon afterward to the neighbouring island of Lerona (now Sainte-Marguerite), where he devoted his time to study and mortification. Desirous of joining the anchorites in the deserts of the East, he consulted John Cassian, who, in reply, sent him some of his ""Collationes"", describing the daily lives of the hermits of the Thebaid. It was at this time that Eucherius wrote his beautiful letter ""De laude Eremi"" to St. Hilary of Arles (c. 428). Though imitating the virtues of the Egyptian solitaries, he kept in touch with men renowned for learning and piety, e.g. Cassian, St. Hilary of Arles, St. Honoratus, later Bishop of Marseilles, and Valerian, to whom he wrote his ""Epistola parænetica de contemptu mundi"". The fame of Eucherius was soon so widespread in southeastern Gaul, that he was chosen Bishop of Lyons. This was probably in 434"" it is certain, at least that he attended the First Council of Orange (441) as Metropolitan of Lyons, and that he retained this dignity until his death. In addition to the above-mentioned letters, Eucherius wrote ""Formularium spiritualis intelligentiæ ad Veranium"", and ""Institutiones ad Salonium"", besides many homilies. His works have been published both separately and among the writings of the Fathers."" (Catholic Encyclopedia). His ""Epistola paraenetica ad Valerianum cognatum, de contemptu mundi (""Epistle of exhortation to his kinsman Valerian, On the contempt of the world"") is an expression of the despair for the present and future of the world in its last throes shared by many educated men of Late Antiquity, with hope for a world to come. Erasmus thought so highly of its Latin style that he edited and published it at Basel in 1520. His commentaries on the work are also included here. His ""Liber formularum spiritalis intelligentiae"", which is addressed to his son Veranius is a defence of the lawfulness of reading an allegorical sense in Scripture, bringing to bear the metaphors in Psalms and such phrases as ""the hand of God"" The term anagoge [in Greek] is employed for the application of Scripture to the heavenly Jerusalem to come, and there are other examples of what would become classic Medieval hermeneutics.Rodulfus Tortarius (also known as Raoul of Tourtier, Raoul de La Tourte, Radulphus Flaviacensis) (c.1063 - c.1122) was a French Benedictine monk of the Abbey of Fleury-sur-Loire, and a poet writing in Latin. He is known both for his style of writing, his biblical commentaries and religious works, and his literary and comic tales. His commentary on ""Leviticus"" is considered important and influential. The first edition of the work is rare.‎
