‎Music in the Art of Renaissance Italy, 1420?1540 Studies in Medieval and Early Renaissance Art History‎

‎, Brepols - Harvey Miller, 2020 Hardback IV+408 pages ., 227 colour ill., 220 x 280 mm. Languages: English. ISBN 9781912554027.‎

‎The first detailed survey of the representation of music in the art of Renaissance Italy, opening up new vistas within the social and culture history of Italian music and art in the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. Visual representations of music were ubiquitous in Renaissance Italy. Church interiors were enlivened by altarpieces representing biblical and heavenly musicians, placed in conjunction with the ritual song of the liturgy. The interior spaces of palaces and private houses, in which musical recreations were routine, were adorned with paintings depicting musical characters and myths of the ancient world, and with scenes of contemporary festivity in which music played a central role. Musical luminaries and dilettantes commissioned portraits symbolising their personal and social investment in musical expertise and skill. Such visual representations of music both reflected and sustained a musical culture. The strategies adopted by visual artists when depicting music in any guise betray period understandings of music shared by artists and their clients. At the same time, Renaissance Italians experienced music within a visual environment that prompted them to think about music in particular ways. This book offers the first detailed survey of the representation of music in the art of Renaissance Italy, and in the process opens up new vistas within the social and cultural history of Italian Renaissance music and art. The authors formed the team for the three-year project 'Music in the Art of Renaissance Italy, c.1420-1540' at the University of Sheffield, funded by The Leverhulme Trust. Tim Shephard is Senior Lecturer in Musicology at the University of Sheffield and a specialist in music, art and identity at the Italian Renaissance courts. Sanna Raninen is a musicologist interested in the visual and material culture of music in Renaissance Europe. Serenella Sessini is an art historian specialising in Italian domestic art. Laura Stefanescu is an art historian working on Italian Renaissance art from the perspective of sensory perception and religious experience. Table of Contents Preface 0. Introduction 1. ‎Summary In the essays collected in this volume, leading scholars from Croatia, the Czech Republic, and Poland, as well musicologists from Western Europe, take on the challenge of fulfilling a historiographical and cultural gap in music history by restoring the place of the countries of Central Europe that, as Milan Kundera put it succinctly, 'vanished from the map of the West'. The opportunity to consider 'other' renaissances enlarges the historiographical perspectives of Renaissance musicology, going beyond the traditional focus on the Franco-Flemish or Franco-Italian axis, and opens new scenarios on unexplored Renaissance music. What was it that happened on a cultural and musical level on the Dalmatian coast - influenced by the economic boost of a powerful Venice? The same question emerges when considering Habsburg Prague and its renewed, central role in the European political theatre, and as a reaffirmed capital that inaugurated a period of economic and cultural renaissance for the Bohemian Kingdom. How did the secularization process evolve in these territories, caught between the religion wars following the Counter-Reformation in the West, and the Turkish threat on the East? What peculiar features does the musical production of these territories reveal? The preference accorded to the expression Renaissance Music is not to be intended as a shortcut. The intention of the contributing scholars is to focus on, and to handle independently, the endogenous cultural production without considering it only as a phenomenon of importation or as the mere imitation of an existing model. In this way, borders reveal a dialectical function in the context of musical Humanism, revealing here, maybe for the first time, an authentic European dimension. The essays in this volume were undertaken within the framework of the European programme EACEA - Culture Programme 2007-2013 Aux confins de l'Humanisme musical: monde slave et culture méditerranéenne, developed between 2010 and 2012 by the Centre d'études supérieures de la Renaissance in Tours, the Matica Hrvastka - Ogranak Dubrovnik (Mediterranean Study Centre of Dubrovnik), the Univerzita Karlova v Praze, and the University of Palermo. ‎Medieval Ritual and Early Modern Music The Devotional Practice of Lauda Singing in Late-Renaissance Italy‎

‎, , 2008 Hardback, 348 p, 160 x 240 mm, Illustrations:27 b/w, English, Italian. *NEW . ISBN 9782503520667.‎

‎The polyphonic lauda had its place of prominence in the lay devotional confraternities in Italian cities in the late Middle Ages and the early modern period. A main theme of this volume is the influence of art music in devotional contexts dominated by ritual functionality, where a modern aesthetic perspective is rarely employed. The authors raise fundamental questions about the validity of such a distinction between functional simplicity and aesthetic sensibility, where the latter is usually reserved for advanced, secular genres such as opera and the madrigal. The question of an aesthetics avant la lettre as applied to devotional practices in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance is examined through analyses of records from youth confraternities in Renaissance Florence. Further, the use during the seventeenth century of the traditional genre of the lauda in settings which stylistically reflect polyphonic art music is discussed and exemplified through the publication of 19 polyphonic laude from a seventeenth-century manuscript found in the archives of the Cathedral of Florence. Combining aspects of recent scholarship in musicology, liturgical history, and confraternity studies, the authors (a musicologist and a church historian) explore both the devotional use of stylistically advanced music in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries as well as the idea that the beauty of music enhances devotion. The volume features an introduction and six chapters as well as a substantial appendix consisting of edited texts and music for several laude. ‎
