Vicaire décrit un ouvrage en deux volumes contenant 25 portraits chacun. Notre exemplaire contient 20 portraits qui apparaissent dans le t. I ou le t. II de la description de Vicaire. Cependant cet exemplaire ne comporte pas de tomaison qui contient une table décrivant exactement son contenu et indiquant que le volume est complet. Il s'agit donc probablement d'un tirage particulier que nous n'avons pas trouvé décrit dans les bibliographies. Vicaire, III, 570-571. ‎ 13 x 19,5 1877 Reliure demi-chagrin vert de l'époque, dos à cinq nerfs orné de cinq abeilles dorées et des initiales L.-N., plats décorés d'un semis floral rouge et vert, gardes de papier marbré, tranches dorées, [1]-66 p. manuscrites d'une fine écriture lisible, en frontispice dessin dans un encadré noir d'un aigle portant un rameau d'olivier surmontant le titre "Anniversaires du 16 mars et 15 août". Contient 3 copies de lettres qui ont été adressées à C.L. Aulnette de la part du Prince Impérial Louis-Napoléon (1856-1879, fils de Napoléon III), en réponse à ses envois à l'occasion de sa majorité (16 mars 1874), de sa date anniversaire du 16 mars 1876, et de la Saint-Napoléon le 15 août. Première copie : lettre à en-tête "Woolmich Common - Woolmich", 28 septembre 1874, de A. Filon [précepteur du Prince Impérial], remerciant Aulnette de "son ouvrage manuscrit dédié au Prince Impérial", suivie du texte lui-même pp.5-46. Deuxième copie : lettre à en-tête "Arenenberg par Ermatigen Cton de Thurgovie", 24 août 1876, de Franceschini-Pietri [secrétaire particulier de Napoléon III, puis du Prince Impérial], remerciant Aulnette de ses vers dédiés au Prince Impérial, suivie de ces mêmes vers, pp. 49-53. Troisième copie : lettre datée de Paris 7 août 1877 de E. Rouher [chef du parti bonapartiste et de l'Appel au peuple après la mort de Napoléon III en 1873], remerciant Aulnette de ses voeux de la part du Prince Impérial, suivi des vers et de textes d'Aulnette datés du 14 mars 1877. Intéressant témoignage de l'attachement à l'Empire et de l'espérance de restauration suscitée par la majorité du Prince Impérial Louis-Napoléon le 16 mars 1874. Rappelons que Louis-Napoléon quitte l'académie militaire anglaise de Woolmich en 1875. Les bonapartistes, avec à leur tête Eugène Rouher, nourrissent l'espoir d'une "succession pacifique à l'illustre Maréchal de Mac-Mahon (Aulnette, p.37). Louis-Napoléon meurt en 1879 sous uniforme anglais en Afrique Australe. Le château d'Arenenberg, situé au bord du lac de Constance à Salenstein, dans le canton de Thurgovie en Suisse, fut celui de la reine Hortense. Napoléon III y fut élevé. Très bon exemplaire.
