When Chinese-American architect I. M. Pei died in 2019, the New York writer and critic Paul Goldberger said it was 'the end of an architectural era'. And yet Pei - one of the most prominent architects of the 20th century whose instantly recognisable buildings include the glass pyramid at the Louvre, Paris; the extension to the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; the Museum of Islamic Art, Doha, Qatar; and the Bank of China tower, Hong Kong - remains a remote figure in the architectural canon. By exploring the architect's iconic and lesser-known projects through new photography, a series of specially commissioned essays and previously unpublished archival material, I. M. Pei: Life is Architecture uncovers revelations about power, politics, race and transcultural identity that resonate ever more strongly in today's complex, transglobal world. I. M. Pei (1917-2019) was born in Ghougnzhou, raised in Shanghai and educated at Harvard. Unlike most architectural monographs, I. M. Pei: Life is Architecture goes beyond the usual building-by-building mix of building photographs and plans. Instead, the book is organized around six thematic chapters that deal with issues such as urban renewal, art and civic form, material and structural innovation, and power, politics and patronage. This book also explores transcultural identity - a significant issue that characterized Pei's unique practice and that continues to resonate with the complexity and diversity that define architectural practice today. Through a narrative of hitherto unpublished archival material, new photography, specially commissioned essays, and brief commentaries by scholars, influential practitioners and Pei's closest collaborators, this book presents the unknown Pei and tells the story of a master whose buildings dazzle the world.‎

‎Etude sur le port de la Pointe des Galets à La Réunion. Elle est divisée en trois chapitres. Le premier est consacré à la description du port: situation, entrée, avant-port, canal de communication, port intérieur, ateliers. Le second se rapporte aux relâches des paquebots dans le port: entrée des bâtiments à vapeur, courants, raz-de-marée, cyclones, corps-morts, bouée en grande rade, moyens de déchargement, remorqueurs. Le troisième présente les conclusions de l’auteur: tarifs de l’approvisionnement en charbon, examen du port au point de vue nautique, instructions nautiques, service sanitaire, résumé. A la suite se trouvent 16 copies de lettres et de rapports de voyage concernant le paquebot Peï Ho, de la Compagnie des Messageries Maritimes, entre Marseille et Tamatave (Madagascar), plus la copie d’un rapport de voyage sur le paquebot Yang Tsé, de la même compagnie, entre Marseille et Yokohama (Japon). Destinés pour la plupart au directeur de l’exploitation des Messageries Maritimes à Marseille, ces rapports contiennent un grand nombre d’observations sur les voyages de l’auteur, principalement dans l’océan Indien, entre 1888 et 1891. Extraits: «Depuis l’inauguration du port des Galets, en février 86, jusqu’à aujourd’hui, il y est entré 29 bâtiments à vapeur dont 3 navires de guerre. La plupart des navires de commerce qui y sont entrés appartiennent à la Cie Péninsulaire havraise favorisée par un tarif spécial dont l’existence n’est un secret pour personne […]. Quoique le nombre des navires qui ont fréquenté le port des Galets soit encore relativement restreint, il n’en est pas moins établi que les grands bâtiments peuvent y entrer sans difficulté. Les 24 entrées et sorties accomplies aujourd’hui l’ont été sans incident et les bâtiments qui se sont présentés n’ont jamais eu à attendre un changement de circonstances nautiques ou météorologiques…» (chap. II). «Le temps de notre séjour au port des Galets a été employé à d’importants travaux. La machine motrice, les machines accessoires, ont été démontées et visitées ainsi que les grandes et petites chaudières. On a fait un nettoyage à fond de toutes les cales qui en avaient grand besoin […]. La coque a été repeinte ainsi que la partie accessible des œuvres-vives. Tout le matériel a été visité, aéré et nettoyé. Les ateliers du port et leur outillage ont été mis gracieusement à notre disposition par le chef de l’exploitation […]. J’ai dû recourir au concours des ateliers eux-mêmes pour quelques travaux urgents… » (A bord du Peï Ho, 21 novembre 1888). Lancé le 7 octobre 1870 à La Ciotat, le Peï Ho assura régulièrement la ligne d’Extrême-Orient jusqu’en 1885, date à laquelle il fut transformé (suppression d’une cheminée, remplacement des chaudières) et placé sur la ligne de Madagascar. En 1888, il fut le premier navire à accoster dans le nouveau port de la Pointe des Galets à La Réunion. Par la suite, il participa au transport des troupes du corps expéditionnaire de Madagascar (1895), puis à l’expédition de Chine (1900). Il fut démoli à Marseille en 1902 (source: site internet messageries-maritimes.org). Situé au nord-ouest de La Réunion, le port de la Pointe des Galets comprend actuellement deux sites: le Port Ouest, construit entre 1879 et 1886, et le Port Est, inauguré un siècle plus tard, en 1986. Il est le seul port de France à cumuler les activités de port de commerce, port militaire, gare maritime, port de plaisance et port de pêche. L’auteur pourrait être Jean-Baptiste Louis Marie Trocmé (1840-1916), capitaine au long cours à la Compagnie des Messageries Maritimes. Lors d’une navigation sur le Peï Ho, il subit un important cyclone les 12 et 13 février 1892 près de l’île Maurice. Cf. Journal de Monaco n° 1770, 5 juillet 1892, p. 2. ‎Pei-Hsuan Wang?s practice is rooted in ways of engaging with her identity, much of which is shaped by the artist and her family's diasporic migration from Taiwan to the US. Folklore, family history, bio(mythos)graphical narratives and geopolitical musings are interwoven in her work, which primarily takes the form of sculpture, installation, drawing, and video. The artist?s recent projects are tributes and prayers to her kinship. Her niece Iris, a first-generation Taiwanese American, has inspired a body of work that imagines racial and cultural hybridity alongside various archetypes in nature and myths. Animal presences become a kind of guardian and portal, giving form to the inner experience. "The intergenerational transformations in Wang?s works range from spiritual beings and mythological creatures to humans, plants, fruits, pop culture characters such as Mulan, or animals. They underscore the more-than-human politics that hide behind the story of the women in her family, as well as behind those of other persons in the world. ‎Het werk van Pei-Hsuan Wang is geworteld in manieren om zich te verdiepen in haar identiteit, die voor een groot deel is gevormd door de diaspora-emigratie van de kunstenaar en haar familie van Taiwan naar de VS. Folklore, familiegeschiedenis, bio(mytho)grafische verhalen en geopolitieke overpeinzingen zijn verweven in haar werk, dat voornamelijk de vorm aanneemt van sculpturen, installaties, tekeningen en video. De recente projecten van de kunstenares zijn hommages en gebeden aan haar verwantschappen. Haar nicht Iris, een Taiwanese Amerikaanse van de eerste generatie, heeft haar geïnspireerd tot een oeuvre waarin ze zich raciale en culturele hybriditeit voorstelt naast verschillende archetypes uit de natuur en de mythen. De aanwezigheid van dieren wordt een soort bewaker en toegangspoort, vorm gevend aan de innerlijke ervaring.
