‎Ubangi. Art and cultures from the African Heartland,‎

‎, Fonds Mercator, 2007, Hardcover with dustjacket, 29.7 x 24.5 cm., 288pp., 350 colour illustrations. brandnew /fine condition !! ISBN 9789061537403.‎

‎Ubangi, in central Africa, is a region where roads and influences meet. This vast country, which extends along the banks of the River Ubangi, is roughly bounded by Lake Chad in the north, by the Congo river in the south, by the Cameroonian border in the west and by the Sudanese border in the east. The sculpture of Ubangi remained for a long time, and quite unjustly, unrecognized. This work describes and compares the astonishing artistic lineages which flourish in this region. Ubangi is a markedly transnational region, located between the rainforest in the south and the savannah in the north, among peoples speaking different languages, among the politically decentralized societies of west Africa and the ancient kingdoms of east Africa. At the heart of these differences, true points of convergence exist, such as the initiation of adolescents at the onset of puberty or the cults of healing and fertility. At these rituals superb objets d?? art were and still are traditionally used. Throughout the ages the region has been a cauldron of cultures under the influences of migration, assimilation and appropriation, but in spite of notable differences, its art nonetheless displays powerful visual coherence. The art is characterised particularly by sculptures in wood of human figures between 10 cm and two metres tall. Musical instruments, amulets and other ordinary objects reveal similarities of form with these figures. Masks and initiation items, but also photographs from the colonial era, illustrate the way in which certain rituals were handed down. This is the first time that a monograph has been devoted to this both varied and magnificent artistic heritage. New book.‎

‎Crossing Cultures: Conflict, Migration, and Convergence. Proceedings of the 32nd International Congress of the History of Art‎

‎Melbourne, Miegunyah Press, 2009. A very thick in-4 book of 276 x 194 mm for (6) vii, xvii, 1108 pp. Coal black hardbinding, title in bronze on the cover and spine, abstract in bronze on the back cover. Printed on couché paper, profusely illustrated with a majority color images. No dust jacket as issued. "Crossing Cultures: Conflict, Migration and Convergence is an in-depth examination of the effect of globalism on art and art history. Covering all aspects of art—including traditional media, painting, sculpture, architecture and the crafts, as well as design, film, visual performance and new media—it explores the themes of conflict, migration and convergence in the visual, symbolic and artistic exchanges between cultures throughout history. Crossing Cultures is a compilation of the conference papers from the 32nd International Congress in the History of Art organized by the International Committee of the History of Art (CIHA), edited by conference convenor Professor Jaynie Anderson. This volume contains more than 200 papers presented at the congress by art historians from twenty-five countries, including Homi K Bhabha (Harvard University), Michael Brand (Director of the John Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles), Marcia Langton (Chair of Australian Indigenous Studies, University of Melbourne), Ronald de Leeuw (Director of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam), Neil McGregor (Director of the British Museum, London) and Ruth B. Phillips (Canada Research Chair in Modern Culture and Professor of Art History, Carleton University, Ottawa). Never before has the state of art history in our polycentric world been demonstrated so well. Crossing Cultures encourages fresh thinking about global art history." (Abstract)‎

‎Being Object. Being Art. Masterpieces from the Collections of the Museum of World Cultures, Frankfurt am Main,‎

‎Frank, Museum der Weltkulturen, 2010 Hardcover, cloth with dustjacket, 210 x 280mm., 323 p. with 210 color illustration. ISBN 9783803033383.‎

‎Cultures contribute to the richness of this world through their uniqueness and variety - as do their material products. This is reflected in the ethnographic collections from Africa, the Americas, Southeast Asia, Oceania and East Asia at the Museum of World Cultures in Frankfurt am Main. Using exceptional photographs, 130 works are presented from a total of approximately 67,000 objects in the museum?s collection. Based on their own individual and subjective points of view, the authors have selected particularly unusual 'ethnographica,' everyday objects or ritual items from an abundance of mostly similar objects made by indigenous societies. The objects in this volume are not only elucidated in their ethnological contexts, but are simultaneously described and interpreted as works of art. In order to better understand these works of art, the authors question the environment in which a work was created and which ideas about color, form, symmetry, balance, etc., might have influenced their artists. The common goal is to present what it is about these works that are exceptional, elaborate, other, perfect or in fact imperfect, harmonious or disturbing. However, the significance of an object is not invariably determined by its original heritage and purpose. Ideas and thoughts associated with an object also alter with a change of viewers and owners. Consequently, the effect of a work of art can only be comprehended within the analysis of aesthetic ideas and a prior knowledge by its respective viewers. Here, the various aesthetic concepts of indigenous and Western societies collide and ideally will lead to reactions that mediate between the differing perspectives.‎
