‎Édition originale de la traduction française de cet ouvrage sur lirrigation dû à William Tatham (1752-1819), soldat et ingénieur anglais émigré aux Etats-Unis. L'édition originale anglaise de cet ouvrage paraît sous le titre : National Irrigation, or The Various Methods of Watering Meadows ; Affording Means to Increase the Populations, Wealth, and Revenue of the Kingdom, by an Agricultural, Commercial, and General Economy in the Use of Water (London, Carpenter, 1801). Né à Hutton-in-the-Forest dans le Cumberland, il émigre vers les Etats-Unis (Virginie) à seulement 16 ans afin dy faire fortune dans le commerce du tabac. Pour ce faire, après la révolution, il étudie le droit en Caroline du Nord à partir de 1784. Il devient lun des fondateurs de Lumberton (Caroline du Nord) en 1787. Cest à ce moment quil développe ses connaissances théoriques et pratiques sur lirrigation, la construction des canaux et la cartographie. De retour en Angleterre en 1796, il y reste huit ans durant lesquels il publie plusieurs ouvrages sur le commerce, larchitecture, la construction des canaux et lirrigation, objet du présent ouvrage. Parmi ses ouvrages on peut citer : An Analysis of the State of Virginia (1790), Political Economy of Inland Navigation (1799), An Historical and Practical Essay on the Culture and Commerce of Tobacco (1800), ce dernier étant sans doute son ouvrage le plus connu, et enfin le présent ouvrage paru sous son titre orignal National Irrigation, or The Various Methods of Watering Meadows... (London, Carpenter, 1801). Il sembarque à nouveau pour la Virginie en 1804 avant dêtre nommé ingénieur topographique au ministère de la guerre de Washington jusqu'en 1815. Malade, Tatham se suicide par un coup de canon sur la place du Capitole de Richmond à Washington. Dans le présent ouvrage, l'auteur passe en revue les différents moyens d'irrigation des terres permettant de considérablement augmenter les rendements agricoles dans des pays comme l'Amérique, l'Angleterre, l'Espagne et la France. Dans un premier temps, il aborde l'irrigation naturelle des prairies par les ruisseaux et les rivières avant de sintéresser dans un deuxième temps aux moyens artificiels (machines) permettant daugmenter lapport en eau. Louvrage est illustré de 8 planches représentant des méthodes dirrigation (roue allemande, jarre deau, auge remplie deau pour arroser une grande surface, machine à filtrer leau inventée par James Poacock etc.) mais aussi des plans de terrains laissant apparaître les canaux avec leurs vannes, le dénivelé, les rivières, les ruisseaux, les réserves deau etc. Exemplaire non rogné de cet ouvrage rare et dimportance pour lhistoire de lirrigation et de lagronomie. 1 vol. 8vo untrimmed (215 x 140 mm) with : XII (false title, title, introduction) ; [1] f. First edition of the French translation of this work on irrigation by William Tatham (1752-1819), an English soldier and engineer who emigrated to the United States. The original English edition appeared under the title: National Irrigation, or The Various Methods of Watering Meadows; Affording Means to Increase the Populations, Wealth, and Revenue of the Kingdom, by an Agricultural, Commercial, and General Economy in the Use of Water (London, Carpenter, 1801). Born in Hutton-in-the-Forest, Cumberland, he emigrated to the United States (Virginia) at just 16 years of age to make his fortune in the tobacco trade. After the Revolution, he studied law in North Carolina from 1784. He became one of the founders of Lumberton, North Carolina, in 1787. It was here that he developed his theoretical and practical knowledge of irrigation, canal construction and cartography. Returning to England in 1796, he stayed for eight years, during which time he published several works on commerce, architecture, canal building and irrigation, the subject of this book. Among his works are: An Analysis of the State of Virginia (1790), Political Economy of Inland Navigation (1799), An Historical and Practical Essay on the Culture and Commerce of Tobacco (1800), the latter undoubtedly his best-known work, and the present work, published under his original title National Irrigation, or The Various Methods of Watering Meadows... (London, Carpenter, 1801). He sailed again for Virginia in 1804, before being appointed topographical engineer to Washington's War Department until 1815. Ill, Tatham committed suicide by firing a cannon from Richmond's Capitol Square in Washington. In this book, the author reviews the various means of irrigating land, which have considerably increased agricultural yields in countries such as America, England, Spain and France. First, he looks at natural irrigation of meadows by streams and rivers, then at artificial means (machines) for increasing water supply. The work is illustrated with 8 plates depicting irrigation methods (German wheel, water jar, trough filled with water to water a large area, water filtering machine invented by James Poacock, etc.), as well as ground plans showing canals with their valves, slopes, rivers, streams, water reservoirs, etc. Untrimmed copy of this rare and important work on the history of irrigation and agronomy.‎
