Dante Gabriel Rossetti was onmiskenbaar een van de meest opwindende kunstenaars van de prerafaelieten, de kunstenaarsgroep die in de tweede helft van de negentiende eeuw met een terugkeer naar de middeleeuwse traditie de oprechte eenvoud en bezieling wilde laten terugkeren in de kunst. Rossetti gaf aan dit uitgangspunt vanaf 1860 een geheel eigen invulling in de voor hem zo karakteristieke vrouwenportretten, geinspireerd op vroeg Italiaanse Renaissance portretten. Het zijn roodharige femmes fatales in een omgeving vol verborgen symboliek; aantrekkelijk maar tegelijk afstandelijk. Tijdens zijn leven waren Rossetti's schilderijen bijna alleen in particuliere collecties te vinden en nauwelijks te zien voor het publiek. De intrigerende verhalen die de ronde deden over zijn liefdesaffaires en zijn bohemienachtig bestaan, droegen bij aan de mythevorming. Wie was Rossetti en hoe moet zijn kunst begrepen worden?
