Presenting over 100 drawings created by Flemish artists in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the three main essays each deal with one of the principal functions of drawings at the time: studies (copies and sketches), designs for other artworks (paintings, prints, tapestries, metalwork, stained glass, sculpture and architecture), and finally the independent drawings. Highlights will include a sketchbook in which a young Rubens has copied Holbein's Dance of Death woodcuts, intricate pen and ink drawings by Pieter Bruegel, miniatures by Joris Hoefnagel, portrait studies by Anthony van Dyck, and a rare survival of a friendship album containing numerous drawings and poems dedicated to its owner. Two recently discovered sheets by Rubens will also be included, a design for a book-illustration on optics and an anatomical study of three legs.‎

‎Bruegel par le détail.‎

‎<p>L’œuvre de Pieter Bruegel (1525-1569) se prête à une étude poussée jusque dans les moindres détails. Pour la plupart, ses tableaux et ses dessins sont si touffus, si riches en scènes anecdotiques et en personnages que nombre d’éléments ou d’allusions cryptées nous échappent si l’œuvre n’est appréhendée que dans sa globalité. Comme Patinir, Bosch ou Met de Bles, Bruegel s’inscrit dans la tradition nordique du « paysage monde (Weltlandschaft) établissant un rapport étroit, en miroir, entre macrocosme et microcosme. Dans ses œuvres, il y a tant à voir que le regard est impuissant à tout saisir. D’autant que la distance culturelle entre notre monde et celui du XVIe siècle brouille la signification de nombreux détails, comme dans les fameux Jeux d’enfants et Les Proverbes flamands. D’où le recours obligatoire à des spécialistes comme Manfred Sellink pour identifier la signification symboliques ou allégoriques de ses motifs et ses scènes narratives nourris du savoir populaire mais aussi de traditions plus savantes ou encore d’allusions politiques. Bruegel est en outre, grâce à sa formation de miniaturiste, dessinateur et concepteur d’estampes, un maître du détail pictural. L’originalité de cet ouvrage tient aux 180 détails empruntés à différents dessins et tableaux, puis répartis et commentés en 8 chapitres thématiques, à savoir : un regard sur le monde ; des temps mouvementés ; péchés et vertus ; monstres et démons ; instruction et amusement ; drôleries imagées. Ces 8 chapitres suivent à travers l’œuvre un parcours plus ou moins chronologique. A ses débuts, en effet, Bruegel s’est focalisé sur les paysages, alors que ses œuvres ultérieures témoignent de sa vision humaniste de l’homme. Cet ouvrage surprendra le spécialiste autant que le simple amateur d’art. Au plaisir des yeux s’ajoute toujours chez Bruegel une stratification intellectuelle qui apparaît surtout dans les détails, ainsi qu’une bonne dose d’humour, qui se manifeste par une approche ironique de l’être humain et de ses faiblesses. Le livre propose aussi une biographie succincte de l’artiste. En outre, toutes les œuvres auxquelles des détails ont été empruntés sont reproduites en totalité, accompagnées de leurs données techniques. Deuxième volume d’une collection où l’œuvre d’un maître ancien célèbre est commentée, à partir de détails significatifs, par un historien de l’art et spécialiste réputé.
