"La confrérie de Sainte-Barbe, constituée en 1448 dans une chapelle de l'église de l'Annonciation à Florence (église desservie par l'ordre des Servîtes), groupe surtout — mais non exclusivement — des Flamands et des Brabançons, en majeure partie tisserands et tapissiers. Elle s'étend peu à peu, obtient de nouveaux locaux dans la même église, puis plusieurs maisons en ville. Mais au XVIe siècle elle est envahie par d'autres éléments, Italiens ou Français, ce qui donne lieu, vers la fin du siècle, à des conflits assez graves, et à une sentence d'arbitrage, prononcée en 1605 par l'archevêque de Florence."
