Le savant américain James Mark Baldwin (1861-1934) est une figure de l'histoire de la psychologie. Le présent ouvrage s'inscrit en continuité de son ouvrage précédent Le développement mental chez l'enfant et dans la race. Il y établit un rapprochement entre psychologie et sociologie, en tâchant de démontrer comment le milieu social agit sur le développement de la personnalité individuelle. S'appuyant sur le concept de sélection naturelle de Darwin, Baldwin dans sa théorie de développement mental met en avant le concept de "sélection organique". Un principe affirmant que l'action de la sélection naturelle de Darwin est modulée en fonction des caractères acquis au cours de l'ontogenèse. Une interprétation du développement mental en fonction de facteurs sociaux et un parallèle entre les moments de l'évolution de l'esprit individuel et ceux de l'évolution sociale.
