Ouvrage capital dans lequel les grands chimistes de l'époque mettent au point une nouvelle manière de dénommer les éléments et ouvrent ainsi la voie à la chimie moderne la dégageant pour toujours de la lourdeur héritée du langage des alchimistes. "Avec Guyton de Morveau, Berthollet et Fourcroy, Lavoisier fait paraître en 1787 la Méthode de Nomenclature chimique qui donne une révision complète de l'ancienne nomenclature" (En Français dans le texte). "First of all, to persuade a new generation of chemists to join their ranks and to complete what Lavoisier had envisaged since 1773 - a revolution in chemistry - these men brought out a collaborative work, the Méthode de nomenclature chimique (1787) ; originally suggested by Guyton De Morveau to eliminate the confused synonymy of chemistry, and prefaced by a memoir of Lavoisier, it emerged as a complete break with the past. Ce dernier se reconnait à la vignette du titre représentant un chérubin affairé à des travaux de distillation, à la marque de l'imprimeur au colophon (page 314), et aux erreurs de pagination suivantes : 242-243 au lieu de 258-259, 246-247 au lieu de 262-263, 250-251 au lieu de 266-267, et 254-255 au lieu de 270-271. ‎Holmiae, Laurentius Salvius, 1758-59 + 1768. 8vo. Beautifully bound in two recent full mottled calf bindings, in pastiche, with five raised bands, and gilt title-labels to spine. Gilt borders to boards and blindstamped ornamental borders to inside of boards. Title-page of volume 1 with two neatly repaired tears, no loss. Very discreet stamp in blind to title-page (Boston Society Natural History). A few leaves lightly brownspotted, otherwise exceptionally clean (vol. 1 presumably cleaned). All in all a lovely copy. ‎The rare seminal tenth edition of Linnaeus' main work (here bound together with the 3rd part, published 10 years later), being the most important edition of this foundational work, as ""[i]t is in this edition that Linnaeus carried out the definitive plan of binominal nomenclature, with diagnosis and synonyms, for the fist time, including the generic and the trivial names, which together form the specific name of each animal. This edition has therefore been accepted as ""the basis of zoological nomenclature"". (Sandberg no. 12). ""Systema Natura"" is considered the bible of natural history, and with the definitive tenth edition of it, it founded modern zooloical nomenclature and changed the science more profoundly than any other work before or after.
