‎Dante the Theologian‎

‎, Brepols, 2025 Paperback, 237 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Language(s):English, Italian. *new ISBN 9782503614281.‎

‎Summary The Dominican master par excellence of the historical method, Pierre Mandonnet (1858-1936) came to Dante as one of the leading Thomists and medievalists of his generation. However, his monograph Dante le th ologien (1935) was neglected and largely forgotten, mainly as a result of the lay historian tienne Gilson's book-length refutation in Dante et la philosophie (1939). This new edition, and the first English translation, re-presents Mandonnet's erudite and thought-provoking monograph to contemporary scholars and Dante enthusiasts. It includes a critical introduction that situates Mandonnet's work in relation to prevailing currents of Dante scholarship in the early twentieth-century, and outlines how it might invite a reappraisal of central features of Dante's thought today. Mandonnet's historically-informed account of Dante the theologian as a preacher, doctrinarian, and distinctively medieval poet, as well as his sophisticated analysis of the theological purpose, method, and content of the Commedia will be an invaluable resource for anyone who seeks to understand Dante's works and their highly contested reception history. ‎[The Divine Comedy]. The Divina Commedia of Dante Alighieri, Consisting of the Inferno - Purgatorio - and Paradiso ‎

‎London A. Strahan for T. Cadell and W. Davies, 1802 Première édition. Collation : Vol. 1 : [A]4 B-2C8 2D4 ; v.2 : A²( -A1) B-2B8 ; v.3 : [A]² B-2D48 2E²./ Errata : volume 3, pages 417-420.pages y compris l'index. 22cm x 14cm.

‎First edition thus. First edition of the first full translation of Dante's Divine Comedy into English. Recent full green leather binding with black labels and gilt titles and details. These are immaculate. Inside, this is an ex reference library edition, with a few small library stamps throughout, but quite unobtrusive. The pages are a little darkened, but still in very good condition. One pager (69/70) has a closed tear to the corner of the page (not affecting text). Frontis portrait of Dante by R.H. Cromek after T. Stothard. Apparently part of the reason that there had not been a prior English translation, was because it was felt that Dante's Catholic views would be unpopular or irrelevant in Protestant England. vi, [i], 408., 384., 420. Collation: Vol. 1: [A]4 B-2C8 2D4; v.2: A²( -A1) B-2B8; v.3: [A]² B-2D48 2E²./ Errata: volume 3, pages 417-420.pages including index. 22cm x 14cm. Vol. 1 includes "A comparative view of the Inferno, with some other poems, relative to the original principles of human nature, on which they are founded, or to which they appeal," "Historical essay of the state of affairs in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries: with respect to the history of Florence; with a view of their influence on the succeeding ages, " "The life of Dante from Leonardo Bruni, " "Summary view of the Platonic doctrine, with respect to a future state. [From] Scott's Christian life, part 1, chap. III, page 18-74, fol. edit."/ Includes bibliographical references and index./ Also issued online. Conforms to WorldCat / OCLC: 11949837. ,‎
