Avery, Victoria: Vulcan's forge in Venus' City : the story of bronze in Venice, 1350-1650. 2012. 700 pages. 161 colour illustrations and 263 black and white illustrations. Cloth. 28 x 21.4cms. Examines the significance of bronze production in Venice across three centuries through numerous case studies of individual works, taking into account recent technical analysis. Includes a chronologically-ordered corpus of over 300 related documents, many of which have not previously been published, while the author re-transcribes the majority of those which have. Themes addressed include state control of the industry and the location, history employment and workshop practises of both state and independent foundries. Also discusses the commissioning and production of steeple bells, functional large bronzes, large statues such as the funerary monument of Tommaso Rangone, and smaller bronze sculptures and artefacts encompassing both unique commissions and mass-produced objects.
