‎Summary The purpose of this volume is to explore, re-interpret and re-contextualise the various natures of practices performed by the Orthodox and Catholic pilgrims in Balkan countries in their devotional ?path to touch the sacred and holy? through the prism of pilgrimage contents, and their articulating, using, and handling strategies. Inter- and transdisciplinary perspectives constitute a strong point for exploring the essence of this collective practice of worship, which is theoretically and critically interpreted, and chronologically and diachronically analysed. Therefore, the various visions of the authors, formed on the basis of qualitative and critical analysis of primary (ethnographic and folkloric data from field interviews, archive documents, samples, etc.) and secondary sources, come to fill a gap in research on pilgrimage in southeast Europe, and especially on pilgrimage practices in Eastern Orthodoxy. Particularly, the ritual practices, sacred places in contemporary Balkan societies, religious folklore, divine intervention stories, miracle-working icons, relics and reliquaries as part of the structure of pilgrimage are discussed. The authors explore the context in which the Christian shrines in the Balkans are spaces where the ethnic and denominational patterns in pilgrimage are revealed openly on multiple levels; they delve into how the correlative effects between politics and religion are manifested. ‎This analytical bibliography, compiled with the support of the University of Antwerp, represents a first, important step toward broader studies concerning the nature, function, and significance of propagandistic materials that have been printed and distributed since the seventeenth century in connection with pilgrimage sites in the Southern Netherlands. Two and a half centuries (from 1600 to 1850) of publications are documented. This is an intriguing period for such a study because Catholic clergy made great use of printed propaganda materials for their (often successful) attempts to revitalize pilgrimages as part of the Counter-Reformation. Consequently, there was a new surge of such publications in the Southern Netherlands as of 1600 that prevailed until the early nineteenth century, when changing ecclesiastical views of how one should experience the Catholic faith led many local clergy to publish new types of pilgrimage books. As tens of thousands of pilgrimage texts were printed in this period, only one essential sub-group of these publications could be featured here, namely those related to Marian pilgrimage sites in the current provinces of Antwerp, Vlaams-Brabant, and the county of Brussels. The resulting bibliography reflects the holdings of numerous collections and provides, for each publication whenever possible, a full transcription of the title page, the collation of the book, and notes on whether or not illustrations, dedicatory texts, and personal notations by previous owners are present. This work consequently provides a useful base of knowledge for those interested in a wide variety of topics pertaining both to the production of devotional literature and the extensive popular hold these pilgrimage sites had on people in and beyond the Southern Netherlands. ‎Summary The Grand Tour of Cosimo di Ferdinando de' Medici, prince of Tuscany, between 1668 and 1669, included many of the great states of Europe - Spain, Portugal, England, Holland and France - in a carefully prepared itinerary chosen to help educate and prepare the 26-year old prince to one day become Grand Duke of Tuscany. All the places chosen to visit were selected to impart cultural, economic, or political advantage to the prince, and none more so than his longest visit: Spain. Lasting more than five months, he visited the cities of Barcelona, Martorell, Montserrat, Igualada, Lleida, Zaragoza, Daroca, Guadelajara, Alcal de Henares, Madrid, Toledo, Mora, Consuegra, Villanueva de los Infantes, And jar, El Carpio, C rdoba, Castro del R o, Granada, Ecija, Carmona, Sevilla, Zafra, Badajoz, and briefly, Lisbon. In March 1669, he reached Santiago de Compostela, arguably the highlight of the trip, where he made a pilgrimage to the tomb of St. James the Apostle in the city's cathedral. The travel diaries of five members of his retinue describe the visit in great detail, providing a rare account of the city and the pilgrim's rites and rituals. Another member of the prince's entourage, the Florentine artist, Pier Maria Baldi, painted a large-scale panorama of Compostela, the most valuable cityscape from the 1600s known to date. Using hitherto unknown source material, this volume charts a journey to one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the world, then held as an equal to Rome and Jerusalem, that stimulated the piety of the man who would become Cosimo III de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany.‎
