Der Teufel und seine Großmutter
Germany S.P. 1815 Première édition. Une caricature rare, coloriée à la main, représentant le Diable et sa grand-mère se disputant l'âme de Napoléon. « Der Teufel und seine Großmutter » est un emprunt délibéré à un conte populaire allemand bien connu et à une expression proverbiale (c'est également le titre d'un conte des frères Grimm, qui raconte l'histoire de soldats concluant un pacte avec le Diable). La légende en dessous : « Er gehört mein ! Nein, mein ! » (« Il m'appartient ! Non, il est à moi ! ») illustre une querelle entre les deux personnages au sujet de sa possession. Très joliment coloriée à la main et imprimée sur du papier vergé. La surface de l'image mesure 13 cm x 9,5 cm. La feuille mesure 19 cm x 12,5 cm. Légèrement collée sur un support en carton crème récent. Dans l'ensemble, en très bon état. Une belle impression bien marquée et des couleurs vives, mais avec une légère usure sur les bords, qui n'affecte pas l'estampe. Verso vierge. Curieusement, cette composition a été reprise presque à l'identique plus tard sous le titre « Le diable et sa femme donnant naissance aux Jacobins, Révolution française », en illustration de l'ouvrage « La Révolution 1789-1882 » de Charles D'Hericault (D. Dumoulin, 1883). Il s'agit d'une pièce rare ; nous ne pouvons identifier l'illustrateur avec certitude (mais Voltz est le candidat le plus probable, car il représentait souvent le Diable en train de se moquer de Napoléon), et nous n'avons pu trouver aucun autre exemplaire de cette uvre, que ce soit à la vente ou dans les bibliothèques.
First edition. A rare hand coloured caricature showing The Devil and his Grandmother arguing over the soul of Napoleon. "Der Teufel und seine Großmutter" is a deliberate borrowing of a well-known German folk-tale/proverbial phrase (it's also the title of a Grimm fairy tale, about soldiers who strike a bargain with the Devil). The caption below: "Er gehört mein! Nein, mein!" ("He belongs to me! No, mine!") shows a squabble between the two over possession. Curiously, the image of Napoleon is quite flattering, and not particularly satirical. Very nicely hand coloured and printed onto laid paper. The image area is 13cm x 9.5cm. The sheet is 19cm x 12.5cm. Lightly laid onto a recent cream card backing. Overall in very good condition. A nice firm strike and bright colouring, but with a touch of edge wear, not affecting the print. Blank to verso. Interestingly, almost exactly this composition was later reworked as "The devil and his wife giving birth to the Jacobins, French Revolution." as an illustration for "La Revolution 1789-1882" by Charles D'Hericault (D Dumoulin, 1883). A rare piece, we cannot identify the illustrator for certain (but Voltz is the most likely candidate, as he often identified the Devil as toying with Napoleon), and have been unable to find any other copies of the work, whether for sale or in libraries. ,
