‎WALTER SWENNEN. THE PHANTOM OF PAINTING. the great retrospective of the artist Walter Swennen. ‎

‎, Hannibal Publishing, 2022 Hardcover 320 x 245 mm, 176 pages, Eng/ DE edition. ISBN 9789463887649.‎

‎Walter Swennen is a painter, born in Brussels in 1946. Like others of his generation, he approaches and explores the medium in new ways by applying principles from other disciplines. Swennen's work constantly challenges the viewer. His paintings demand slow and careful inspection. The layers of paint often hide a veritable battlefield of attempts, corrections, words and messages. His Dutch-speaking family suddenly began speaking French when he was five years old, and language games accordingly form an integral part of his art. A painting by Walter Swennen is not just a result, but also a process, which allows us to trace the path taken by the artist to achieve the ultimate 'visible' image. A key constant is the pleasure he derives from the battle with the paint. Non-conformist that he is, Swennen paints on anything: from canvas to wood to discarded camping tables, stoves and even washing machines. Walter Swennen's long and varied career deserves to be recognised by a wide public for its radical nonconformism and the influence that the artist still exerts on young artists today. Swennen is represented by the Brussels Xavier Hufkens Gallery and the Gladstone Gallery in New York, and won the prestigious Ultima award for lifetime services to the visual arts in 2019. His work can be found in numerous museum and gallery collections. This book offers a wonderful overview of his oeuvre and is the catalogue to an international solo exhibition which launches in Kunstmuseum Bonn (June-August 2021) before travelling to Kunstmuseum Den Haag (autumn 2021) and Kunstmuseum Winterthur (spring 2022). With textual contributions from Daniel Koep, Konrad Bitterli and Stephan Berg.

‎Walter Knoll The Furniture Brand of Modernity.‎

‎, teNeues , 2019 Hardcover, 352 pages Illustrated. 32 x 25 cm . ENGLISH ISBN 9783961711796.‎

‎A vivid company biography of leading furniture manufacturer Walter Knoll based on its formative figures Wilhelm, Hans, and Walter Knoll and, for more than 25 years to date, Markus Benz. Walter Knoll, the book, charts the more than one-and-a-half-century-old history of this remarkable furniture dynasty, tracing the evolution of its designs in relation to key cultural and historical developments. When the Thomas Mann House in Los Angeles was recently bought by the Federal Republic of Germany and transformed into a representative transatlantic meeting place, it was Walter Knoll furnishings that defined its interior design and showcased German creativity and economic-cultural performance. Based in Herrenberg, near Stuttgart, the more than 150-year-old furniture business is one of the most successful furniture companies of the modern era and a global leader in the high-end furnishings segment. Walter Knoll's impressively long history dates back to Wilhelm Knoll, the founding father of the Knoll dynasty, who first set up a leather shop in Stuttgart in 1865. Knoll rose from being a tanner and merchant to the court purveyor to the House of Wurttemberg. When his sons, Willy and Walter, took over the company in 1907, they began producing seating-introducing the first club armchair to Germany and becoming the industry's first exporter. Their advances marked a revolution in upholstered furniture. After founding his own company in the 1920s, Walter Knoll was a breakout sensation in the avant-garde interior design world with a landmark exhibition at the Weissenhof Estate in Stuttgart, under the direction of Mies van der Rohe, in 1927. His son, Hans Knoll, went to the U.S. in the 1930s and himself founded his own company, Knoll Inc., and with it, re-wrote design history. In 1993, Markus Benz, the son of Rolf Benz, joined the Knoll ranks, continuing the successful cooperation with internationally-renowned architects and designers. ‎

‎Powermask the power of masks. / Walter van Beirendonck‎

‎, Lannoo, 2017 Hardcover, 240 pag. Illustrated. 28x24cm. English text. FINE!. ISBN 9789401442954.‎

‎To this very day masks capture the imagination: where does one's identity stop and a transformation start to take place when someone puts on a mask, how do we deal with old symbolic and mythical meanings, when do we create new ways of defining ourselves, what is accepted and where does controversy start? Again and again, POWERMASK calls into question the border between tradition and renewal, between uncovering and covering up, thereby connecting past and present across different cultures. Ever since his first collections from the 1980s, Belgian fashion designer Walter Van Beirendonck has been intrigued by masks. In this exhibition and its accompanying catalogue POWERMASK, his personal fascination for masks and their impact on a person's identify translates into a particular and varied view of the phenomenon of masks. He also examines the role of the mask in the work of visual artists, photographers, and fashion designers. With contributions by Kaat Debo, Chris Dercon, Alexandra van Dongen, Clémence Mathieu, Valentine Plisnier, Jan Willem Sieburgh, Fanny Wonu Veys, and Sonja Wijs. With works by Diane Arbus, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Hans Bollongier, Louise Bourgeois, Olaf Breuning, Thom Browne, Pieter Bruegel de Oude, Dietmar Busse, Richard Butler, Claude Cahun, Giorgio de Chirico, Christophe Coppens, Gustave Courbet, James Ensor, Charles Fréger, Coco Fronsac, Phyllis Galembo, Jean Paul Gaultier, Craig Green, Erik Halley, Keith Haring, Hannah Höch, Axel Hoedt, Stephen Jones, Folkert de Jong, Lajos Kassák, Brian Kenny, Christoph Klauke, Manon Kündig, Inez van Lamsweerde, James Merry, Robert Mapplethorpe, Martin Margiela, Paul McCarthy, Emil Nolde, Niels Peeraer, Pablo Picasso, Bertjan Pot, Richard Quinn, Augustin Rebetez, Tony Saulnier, Hans Schärer, Cindy Sherman, Saul Steinberg, John Stezaker, Sophie Taeuber-Arp, Maiko Takeda, Walter Van Beirendonck, Dirk Van Saene, Viktor & Rolf, Sally Wassink.‎
