Summary Every chapter of the three volumes of Giovanni Battista Martini's Storia della Musica begins and ends with an enigmatic canon: 72 puzzle canons, which formed the subject of debate in the 18th and 19th centuries. Luigi Cherubini proposed solutions for all canons, forming a pedagogical collection designed to reveal the secrets of the enigmatic canons practice to 19th-century musicians. Cherubini explained in detail how each proposed solution was reached. The resolutions are all based on a 'Table of Latin words', a list of enigmatic expressions. For each expression, Cherubini gives an explanation detailing how they must be interpreted in order to find the resolution of the riddles. Practically 56 expressions from Cherubini's 'Table of Latin words' can be identified in Renaissance treatises. Until the first half of the 16th century, a canon was a formula that musicians would put into action to create one or more parts of music ? the 'canon' was just the formula and not the music itself. Explanations of such formulas were compiled in Renaissance music treatises. It is this journey ? the one enigmatic expressions took as they travelled from the Renaissance into the 19th century ? that Luigi Cherubini's complete edition of proposed solutions to Padre Martini's enigmatic canons seeks to illustrate. This international and interdisciplinary collection of essays discusses the regular canons in the medieval British Isles from their emergence in the twelfth century to the end of the monastic period in the sixteenth century. Of all the new monastic and religious groups to settle in the British Isles in the course of the twelfth century the regular canons were the most prolific. At the heart of their existence was the vita apostolica, but even more than other such groups the regular canons became involved in active spiritual care of their communities. Perhaps as a result of this feature they also enjoyed sustained support from founders, patrons and benefactors, and new foundations continued to be made long after the main force of the expansion of the monastic orders had declined. This interdisciplinary volume brings together scholars from Scotland, Ireland, Wales and England who work on aspects of the history, culture, art history and archaeology of the regular canons in the medieval British Isles. Between them, the chapters of this book consider the regular canons in their wider historical and historiographical context, assessing their role in the religious, social, cultural, economic and political world of the medieval British Isles, and introducing new and recent research on this important religious group. The booklets (Notices): 22 pp. (reprocuced from handwriting), (18) pp. handwritten (Notices descriptive), 21 pp. handwtitten (Tir et Manoeuvres). 12 large folded lithographed plates, all handcoloured and measuring around 110 x 100 cm. each (some smaller, one larger). Each plate folded within original wrappers on which calligraphed titles. Some plates with small closed tears. The plates shows all constructions and installations in the scale of 1:10.

Description de l'art de fabriquer les canons
Paris, Imprimerie du Comité de Salut Public, an 2 (1794), in-4, [4]-VIII-231 pp, 4 tabl. et 60 pl, Basane de l'époque, dos à 5 nerfs orné et portant une pièce de titre en maroquin noir, super ex-libris [Schneider, officier d'artillerie], Première édition. Gaspard Monge (1746-1818), créateur de la géométrie descriptive, fut l'un des fondateurs de l'École Polytechnique. Il entreprit la rédaction de ce livre par ordre du Comité de Salut Public afin de proposer une méthode rapide de fabrication des canons pour satisfaire les nécessités de la défense nationale. Les 4 tableaux dépliants imprimés sur papier azuré donnent les tables des dimensions des canons de fer pour l'artillerie de mer et des canons de bronze pour l'artillerie de terre ; et les 60 planches dépliantes représentent les machines utilisées pour leur fabrication (fourneaux, moulages en terre et en sable, grues, marmites, fonderies, tours et tourillons) ; les deux dernières planches, de grande dimension, présentent l'ensemble des canons réalisés grâce à la méthode de Monge.
