Osei Naumovich Steinberg (1830 - 1908) - official rabbi of Vilna, inspector of the Vilna Jewish Teachers' Institute, Hebraist, exegete, lexicographer of the Hebrew language and translator of the books of the Old Testament into Russian. Honorable Sir. For his translations and commentaries, Steinberg used a comparison of the Masoretic text with other translations: the Septuagint, Vulgate, Samaritan, Targum of Onkelos, as well as explanations of the Talmud, Midrash and rabbinic literature, studies of contemporary Orientalists and archaeologists. Steinberg's translations are close in linguistic form to the Russian text of the Synodal Translation. Steinberg belonged to the Jewish Talmudists, for this reason his translation differs significantly from the Synodal translation, especially when presenting messianic passages (for example, the Book of Genesis, chapters 3, 15; 49, 10 and others).
