Joseph Just Scaliger (1540-1609), was a French scholar who studied in Paris, becoming a Calvinist in 1462. He fought with the Huguenots, was a professor at Geneva, and succeeded J. Lipsius at Leyden University. De Jonge, in his Study of the NT, concludes that Scaliger wrote his notes at different times, prior to 1593, without intending them to be published. He also stresses Scaliger"s importance for biblical criticism, noting that Scaliger alone in his time had a deep-rooted lack of trust of the current New Testament text. Darlow & Moule, 4667.
