Vers 1900 ; fort vol. in-folio de [1] f., 95 pp., maroquin violet à gros grain, filet d'encadrement à froid, dos lisse avec titre doré en long, cadre intérieur de même maroquin orné d'une dentelle dorée, doublures et gardes de moire violette, tranches dorées.
Manuscrit soigneusement calligraphié à l'encre noire sur papier fort, entièrement monté sur onglets. Le texte est encadré de deux filets violets dessinant des motifs à la grecque dans les angles. La régularité de l'écriture et la finesse des lettrines ou des titres décorés attestent un artiste confirmé. L'ouvrage est illustré de 73 photographies de tableaux de maîtres représentant la Passion, la plupart légendées à l'encre, dont La Cène de Léonard de Vinci, Le Couronnement d'épines de Caravage, le Calvaire de Van Eyck, Jésus présenté au peuple de Rembrandt, quatre Rubens, trois Véronèse, etc. Une table à la fin du volume classe les illustrations par écoles (italiennes, flamande, hollandaise, espagnole, allemande, française). Elle est suivie de 3 tables annexes de la Passion selon St Marc, St Luc et St Jean, qui laissent penser que l'auteur avait prévu ou réalisé un tétraptyque. Belle réalisation, unique. Dos passé, léger accroc à la coiffe inférieure.

Traduction dédiée au roi Louis XVIII par l'éditeur. Elle est ornée d'un frontispice et de 4 figures d'après les dessins d'Horace Vernet. Bel exemplaire relié au chiffre de l'ancienne vice-reine d'Italie Amélie-Auguste de Bavière (1788-1851), duchesse de Leuchtenberg, épouse d'Eugène de Beauharnais. Dos légèrement éclairci, piqûres.

Édition originale d'un incunable de la photographie. L'ouvrage, par le conservateur de la bibliothèque royale de Belgique, est orné de 14 photographies originales sur papier albuminé contrecollées qui sont l'œuvre d'Edmond Fierlants. Elles représentent des gravures de Wierix aux dimensions exactes des originaux. Le texte est composé d'une notice biographique sur les frères Wierix, graveurs hollandais du XVIe siècle et de charmants poèmes qui légendent les scènes représentées. Photographe belge, Edmond Fierlants (1819-1869) s'installa à Paris et fut membre fondateur dès 1855 de la Société française de Photographie. Les villes d'Anvers et de Bruxelles lui confièrent la tâche d'immortaliser les édifices voués à la destruction. Il se spécialisa dans la reproduction de trésors des musées. Une partie de son œuvre a été exposée en 1982 au Crédit Communal de Belgique à l'occasion de la rétrospective La Photographie des origines à nos jours.- Auer, Encyclopédie internationale des photographes 1839 à nos jours.- Tirage à 300 exemplaires.- Lorenz, I, p. 36. Summary This collection of essays aims to offer a multi-disciplinary approach to nineteenth and early twentieth century scholarship on Jesus and early Christianity, which illustrates the width and depth of the questions that critical reflections on the historical Jesus raised in and beyond the field of liberal theology. More precisely, it focuses on Jesus scholarship as practiced in various disciplines and fields that engaged with the academic study of religion. On the other hand, this volume aims for a comprehensive, multi-perspectivist historicization of this scholarship, considering the full range of religious, cultural, racial, political, and national dynamics that hosted the many controversies over the historical Jesus. Divided into five sections, the eleven essays in this book are organized according to guiding themes and a loose chronological structure. The first section revisits the roots of the Forschung in Liberal-Protestant Germany, and especially focuses on the maturation of historical-critical consciousness in the work of Reimarus (and his predecessors), Schleiermacher and Strauss. The second section is concerned with the rise of the ?oriental Jesus? against the background of the making of the academic, non-theological study of religion as a scientific discipline. The third section explores how themes related to the historical Jesus and the rise of Christianity were treated among different academic disciplines from the early second half of the nineteenth century onwards. The fourth section explores how the historical Jesus was at the same time further explored by the biblical scholars and theologians who integrated new comparative methods in their research. The fifth section, finally, highlights the cultural-political appropriations that were made of scholarly writings on Jesus, which not rarely constituted the bricks with which radical political movements built their houses.
