"Pieno di coraggio e compostezza, Giulio II esalò il suo ultimo respiro la notte tra il 20 e il 21 febbraio 1513". Il 20 febbraio, sul suo letto di morte chiamò i Cardinali perchè "portassero avanti una lecita elezione del Papa prendendo in considerazione la sua ultima Bolla; l'elezione è aperta solo ai Cardinali e non al Concilio".
