Une gravure originale représentant la capitulation des forces britanniques en Amérique pendant la guerre d'indépendance. « La reddition de l'armée du lord Cornwallis » illustre la capitulation de lord Cornwallis à Yorktown, avec les forces françaises et américaines rassemblées dans une scène militaire solennelle. Cornwallis est représenté à gauche, se rendant à George Washington. En réalité, il s'agissait d'une opération de propagande. Le général Cornwallis avait prétendu être malade et n'était pas présent. C'est le général O'Hara qui remit l'épée de Cornwallis à Washington. Cet événement eut lieu le 19 octobre 1781. L'inscription indique que le dessin a été réalisé par P.-C. Marillier et exécuté sous la direction de Suntach. Cette gravure est pratiquement identique à celle publiée par François Godefroy et Nicolas Ponce, qui a été répertoriée comme « d'après Marillier ». Nous ne pouvons pas affirmer avec certitude qu'elle est antérieure à l'édition de Godefroy / Ponce, mais l'absence de toute autre mention relative au graveur laisse penser que cela pourrait être le cas. L'ouvrage de Godefroy « Guerre d'indépendance des États-Unis d'Amérique » fut le premier livre français à mentionner les États-Unis sur la page de titre (Sabin 68421). La gravure visible mesure 17,5 cm x 20,5 cm. Elle est montée sous passe-partout et sous verre dans un cadre en bois peint et doré mesurant 28 cm x 32 cm. Clément-Pierre Marillier était un dessinateur et graveur français spécialisé dans la gravure en creux et l'eau-forte. Il était un ami proche de Nicolas Ponce, qui gravait fréquemment ses uvres. Ensemble, ils ont soutenu la Révolution française. Marillier est décédé en 1808. Les bords du cadre en bois présentent quelques traces d'usure, mais la gravure est en excellent état.‎

‎First edition. An original engraving from the surrender of the British forces in America during the war of Independence. "Reddition de l'armée du Lord Cornwallis" is depicting the surrender of Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown, with the French and American forces assembled in a formal military scene. Cornwallis is shown to the left, surrendering to George Washington. In fact this was propaganda. General Cornwallis claimed to be ill and was not in attendance. General O'Hara presented Cornwallis's sword to Washington. This occurred on October 19th 1781. The lettering states that the design was drawn by P.-C. Marillier and executed under the direction of Suntach. This engraving is virtually identical to that published by Francois Godefroy and Nicolas Ponce, which was recorded as "after Marillier." We cannot be certain if this was before the Godefroy / Ponce issue, but the lack of any other engraver's information would suggest it may be. The work by Godefroy "Guerre d'indépendance des États-Unis d'Amérique" was the first French book to mention the United States on the title page (Sabin 68421). Visible engraving is 17.5cm x 20.5cm. This is under passe partout and glass in a gilt painted wooden frame measuring 28cm x 32cm. Clément-Pierre Marillier was a French draftsman and engraver specializing in intaglio and etching. He was a close friend of Nicolas Ponce, who frequently engraved his work. Together they supported the French Revolution. Marillier died in 1808. The edges of the wodden frame has a little rubbing, but the engraving is in excellent condition. .‎
