‎Le 7 novembre 1987, après trente ans de pouvoir sans partage, le premier président de la République tunisienne est déclaré dans l´incapacité d´exercer les fonctions inhérentes à sa charge. Ainsi s´achève la carrière d´un dirigeant exceptionnel dont le destin s´identifie à l´histoire de son pays. Né à Monastir en 1901, jeune avocat, Habib Bourguiba s´engage au début des années trente dans le mouvement national. Il en établit peu à peu l´emprise sur le peuple tunisien qu´il galvanise par ses talents de tribun. Partisan de l´entente avec la France, il parvient à lui arracher l´autonomie interne, puis l´indépendance, proclamée le 20 mars 1956.Entreprenant dès lors de vastes réformes, au premier rang desquelles l´émancipation de la femme, il s´attachera à faire de la Tunisie un pays moderne et ouvert sur l´extérieur, en particulier l´Occident. Les dernières années à la tête du pays du leader vieillissant seront entachées par la maladie et les luttes pour sa succession ainsi que par la montée des tensions sociales. Il achèvera son existence dans sa ville natale, bénéficiant de la sollicitude de son successeur et du respect de tout son peuple.Car personne n´oubliera la dimension charismatique de cet homme d´Etat hors du commun. On 7 November, 1987, after thirty years of unchallenged power, the first president of the Tunisian Republic was declared unable to perform the duties of his office. Thus ends the career of an exceptional leader whose fate is identified with the history of his country. Born in Monastir in 1901, Habib Bourguiba, in the early 1930s, as a young lawyer, became involved in the national movement. A great orator, he gradually won over and galvanised the Tunisian people. Supporter of the agreement with France, he succeeded in securing domestic autonomy and then independence, proclaimed on 20 March, 1956. Thereafter, undertaking comprehensive reforms, the foremost among them being the empowerment of women, he was determined to make Tunisia a modern country, open to the outside world, especially the West. The ageing leader's last years as head of state were marred by illness and succession struggles as well as increasing social tensions. He last days were spent in his hometown, enjoying the attention of his successor and the respect of his people. No one will forget the charismatic dimension of this extraordinary statesman ‎
