Lazarsfeld, est de s'attacher moins à résumer l'information sociologique qu'à préciser les problématiques soit générales, soit particulières aux diverses branches de la discipline. Comme l'indique avec force R. K. Merton dans son Introduction, il ne suffit pas d'aligner des faits et de demander « pourquoi » ils existent, mais il faut encore élucider les divers sens du mot « pourquoi » dans chaque cas et voir comment les interrogations se constituent en corps de problèmes. L'importance théorique de l'ouvrage se révèle considérable..."
