‎The Antwerp railway station, which opened in 1905, is one of the world's majestic eclectic public buildings. Even with its impressive canopy, however, it is more than purely an architectural masterpiece. And thus the U.S.-born writer Alexandra Richardson, who lives in London, set about weaving a tale centred around both real and fictional individuals who played their special roles in the creative process of erecting this iconic edifice. Gewapend met camera, pen of tekenblok bestuderen ze het bouwwerk, leggen details vast en laten zich inspireren. Het kan gaan om studenten architectuur, uit vakgroepen als kunstgeschiedenis of de historie van stedebouw,. Maar ook om leerlingen van foto- of tekenopleidingen. Het station van Antwerpen is dan ook een van de interessantste die de wereld rijk is. Het eclectische bouwwerk, dat in 1905 met zijn imposante overkapping in gebruik ging, is echter meer dan een architectonisch meesterwerk. De in Londen wonende in de Verenigde Staten geboren schrijfster Alexandra Richardson, bekend van Passionate Patron: The Life of Alexander Hardcastle and the Greek Temples of Agrigento Archeological lives (Archaeopress 2009) dook daarom in archieven mede in de menselijke achtergronden van het ontstaan van het iconische bouwwerk. Aan de hand van fictieve en werkelijke bij het ontstaan van het station betrokken personages, zette ze een heldere saga op. Daarmee haalt de schrijfster ook een tijdsbeeld terug van de behoorlijk in vergetelheid geraakte periode voorafgaand aan de alles overschaduwende Eerste Wereldoorlog. Hierdoor weten we nu beter hoe het komt dat aan het eind van een hooggelegen loper aan stadssporen in de Scheldestad zo'n kathedraal verrees. Maar belangrijker is waarom dat spoorwegknooppunt al meteen een draaischijf voor menselijke lotgevallen werd.‎
