Volume one rebacked and with some wear of gilding on spine, small unobtrusive hole in first plate, previous owner's name (Caladroy) written in old hand on title-pages, lower corner of a few pages and one plate of vol. 4 with waterstain, not or hardly affecting the text. Attractive set of these very important early narratives of South Africa. The first two volumes (first voyage) in a later edition (the first appeared in 1790), and the last 3 volumes (second voyage) in fitrst edition. This edition of the first voyage has more plates than the first edition. The plates depict the local fauna (birds, giraffe, hippopotamus, hyena, black monkey), local people and numerous views. It includes the famous plate of the ‘’Hottentote au tablier’’ (which is sometimes missing because of its explicit nature).
