A hand coloured map, taken from Thomson's "New General Atlas". This shows North Africa (including the whole of the Sahara and West Africa). As well as the hand coloured detail, the map shows the routes of Mr Browne, Mr Horneman, Mr Bruce and Mr Parks. Originally this map was paired in a double page, folio atlas with a similar map for South Africa (not present). 280 x 515 mm (11 x 20Πinches).

North Africa N/P 1880 Un groupe de jeunes enfants est assis sur des marches au bord de l'aire commune de lavage des vêtements. Afrique du Nord - probablement Maroc. Un adulte vêtu d'une robe blanche surveille les enfants au premier plan, tandis qu'un jeune enfant vêtu d'une robe similaire leur fait face. Palmiers et route poussiéreuse à l'arrière-plan. Les enfants semblent trop jeunes pour être à l'école. Une belle image à l'albumine. Légèrement décolorée, mais dans l'ensemble en bon état. H265mm x 210mm. Sur carte verte 430 x 350 mm. Un peu assombri et bosselé mais toujours en bon état.

The children seem too young to be in school. An attractive albumen image. Slightly faded, but overall in good condition. H265mm x 210mm. On green backing card 430 x 350 mm. A little darkened and bumped but still in good state. .

Edizione del 1976 di questa opera di viaggio in Africa Occidentale di Mary Kingsley (1862-1900). Mary Kingsley fece due viaggi in Africa nel 1893 e 1894 per studiare le religioni primitive e raccogliere esemplari di storia naturale. Viaggiò attraverso paesi selvaggi, lontani da ogni forma di civilizzazione europea e fece importanti lavori di ricerca tra i fiumi Ogowe e Rembve. i suoi resoconti di viaggio sono pervasi da un profondo humour e divennero immediatamente dei best sellers. Nel 1900 morì a Simonstown dove stava facendo volontariato come infermiera durante la Guerra del Sud Africa. Per sua volontà venne sepolta al mare. Robinson p. 136-8. Mary Kingsley spent her first thirty years at home taking care of her parents. She read most of her father's library and inherited his passion for travel. After the parent's death she made two travels in 1893 and 1894 to West Africa to study the primitive religions of the tribes and collect natural history specimens. She travelled through wild countries, away form civilisation and European influence, and she made important research work between the rivers Ogowe and Rembve. She did not dispute Britain's right to govern Africa but she warmly argued Britain's method of doing so and fought to the last of introducing intricate laws. Kingsley's two travel accounts written with a great sense of humour became immediate best sellers, both for their serious scientific content and their exuberant raciness. In 1900 she died at Simonstown where she had volunteered for nursing service in the South African War. She was buried at sea by her own wish. Robinson p. 136-8.
